BRAND Program


 

Application Packet

  • The application deadline for the next summer's BRAND Program is December 15.

  • A completed application means that the applicant has completed/provided the packet items numbered below. The first two or three items are submitted online; the remaining need to be mailed in to this address:

    UW Admissions Web Site (then click on "Apply Online")

    You need to apply and be admitted to the University of Wyoming as a declared nursing major by the December 15th deadline. [Current UW students will have already completed this step. New transfer students will need to complete this requirement if not already done.] Do note that UW has a separate application/fee.

  3. Submit Online or Submit by Mail:
    BRAND Application Fee of $30

    Pay your (nonrefundable) $30 application fee either by

    • paying ONLINE

      OR

    • mailing to address as noted above. If you send a check, please make it payable to 'Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing'.

    Note: if you requested a transcript evaluation and paid the $30 transcript evaluation fee, your application fee will be waived.

  4. Submit by Mail:
    Personal essays addressing the three specific questions listed below

    Please provide a written essay for each of the three questions/topics below and mail to the Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing by the December 15 deadline:

    1. What talents, assets, and skills do you have and how will they contribute to nursing?

    2. Discuss your past experience and the relevance to nursing.

    3. Give us an example of an ethical situation you have encountered; what you learned from it; and how you would handle it differently in the future.

    Directions for completing your essays:

    - Begin each essay on a separate page
    - Each essay may not be more than one page long
    - Be sure to include your name on the upper right corner of each page
    - Begin each essay by including the question/topic being addressed
    - Your answers must be typed
    - Times New Roman - 12 pt. font
    - 1-inch margins
    - Double-spaced

  5. Submit by Mail:
    Official transcripts from all schools

    • Have official transcripts sent to the Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing from all colleges/universities previously attended and currently attending through the most recently completed semester. Initial grades/transcripts should be received in the School of Nursing no later than the application deadline, December 15th. (Postmarks by the deadline are not considered as meeting the deadline.) If you already had your transcripts submitted to the UW Admissions Office, please mark accordingly on your application within the Education Data section. Our office will request copies (as needed) from their office.

    • For the BRAND program, your transcripts must show the receipt of a previous baccalaureate degree. Students must have a C or better in all required courses and a 2.5 minimum grade point average (GPA) for the five prerequisite courses. Please be advised that this does not guarantee admission.

    • IMPORTANT: History Requirement
      The State of Wyoming requires that any student that receives a degree from an institution of higher learning in Wyoming must have a U.S. History course that includes WY Government. If you have had a history class but your previous bachelor's degree is not from WY, you will need to take a 1-credit hour WY Government course which is available from the University of WY or any WY Community College.

  6. Submit by Mail:
    CNA/LPN certification/licensure

    • If you have current CNA Certification or LPN Licensure, forward a photocopy to the address noted above by the December 15 deadline.

    • If you do not have current CNA Certification or LPN Licensure, then note on the online application of your plans for completing that certification. Note: if proof of state board of nursing certification is not presented by May 1, any provisional acceptance to the accelerated program track will be revoked.

  7. Submit by Mail:
    Three recommendations using linked form below

    Download the RECOMMENDATION FORM in either WORD or PDF format and make three copies for the people from whom you are requesting a recommendation. Select individuals who can address your adult learner capabilities. The recommendations cannot be from personal friends or family. Provide these individuals with a stamped, addressed envelope so that they can mail the completed form directly to the Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing. Use the mailing address at the beginning of this page. All three forms must be completed and to our office by the December 15 deadline.

  8. Interview

    Applicants will be notified by the end of January if they have been awarded an interview. Personal interviews will be held in February/March; students are expected to come to the Laramie, Wyoming campus for these interviews.


Acceptance:

Written admission notification will be given no later than March 15. Provisional acceptance may be granted, but is CONTINGENT upon completion of CNA certification (if unable to complete by application deadline), any requested follow-up documentation, and successful completion of background check (once you are accepted into the program, you will be given specific directions on completed this check through the required company).


Other Requirements:

  • All students must be able to perform the essential functions of a student nurse. Reasonable accommodations will be afforded to student nurses with disabilities as required under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Faculty and staff from the School of Nursing will work with staff from the University Disability Support Services to determine what constitute reasonable accommodations.

  • As part of the requirements for admission and progression in the program, students will need to undergo criminal background checks. Drug screening may be required by some clinical sites.

NCLEX Eligibility:

If you have been convicted of a misdemeanor or a felony, you should contact the Wyoming State Board of Nursing or the state in which you plan to take the NCLEX prior to accepting a position in the School of Nursing. State boards of nursing control who is eligible to sit for the NCLEX after completing the requirements of an educational program. If you cannot take the exam, you will not be licensed as a registered nurse.
