E-Mail & Web Access

Communication, class announcements, and other class activities will be through UW e-mail/www. All students will need to have world-wide web access and have a University of Wyoming e-mail account. Students are expected to use a UW e-mail address for ALL school related activities, including online courses. Please be sure to check your UW e-mail regularly.

Setting up a UW e-mail account

Students no longer need to "set up" their computer accounts. Their accounts are created for them automatically and are based upon the student's registration and enrollment status. Once a student is accepted to UW, a username and password are created for them. Because they are not yet a full fee-paying student, this account only has limited access. They can log in to WyoWeb so they can register for classes. After they register for a class, the account is granted additional access, including email and the ability to log in to campus computer labs controlled by Information Technology.

New students can get their username and initial password from any computer with access to the Internet. They simply go to the WyoWeb homepage (http://wyoweb.uwyo.edu) and click on the "Get your username and initial password" link, located beneath the boxes for username and password. They will supply information like name, date of birth, W number, or the last 4 digits of their SSN. They will then be given their username and initial password and can log in to WyoWeb immediately. The first time they do so, they will be forced to change their password and answer some security questions in case they lose their password in the future. They're now free to register for courses, use WyoWeb's many other utilities and features, and begin computing at UW.

Accessing your UW e-mail account

Access to the UW e-mail account is available via the web through WyoWeb.  You may prefer to use a different e-mail provider for non-school activities. Should this be the case, you are asked to not forward your UW e-mail to that provider as this has caused problems for students in not receiving messages sent by the School of Nursing (see problems listed below).

Some problems you should be aware of...

...if you decide to forward UW e-mail messages to a different e-mail address:

  • You may or may not receive all messages sent by the School of Nursing through our distribution lists if forwarding your UW account to another e-mail provider.

  • Warning: we have discovered that other e-mail providers (i.e., hotmail, yahoo) delete messages that come from distribution lists, determining them to be junk mail.  Students with such accounts do not receive important messages!

  • Over quota – we occasionally have messages bounce back undeliverable due to the student’s mailbox being over quota.  Be sure to keep your mailbox cleared of unnecessary messages so that does not happen to you.

  • A UW e-mail account is necessary to access online UW Library services, etc.

  • You need to always remember to re-forward your UW account should you change providers.  Failure to update that forwarding, results in missing messages.

  • Each semester you take online courses, you should check your Profile Page within the eCollege website to be sure your e-mail address is accurate and reflects your UW email address.
