Mission Statement

The teacher-student relationship is one that is held in the highest regard. UW voice faculty will guide the student to develop the voice in a manner that is pedagogically sound, sets high standards for the outcome of performance, promotes the development of healthy technique and good practice habits.

The student will learn to use the voice in service of a great artistic tradition, toward promotion of community, and to use vocal music as a vehicle for expression and communication. In the classroom, gleaned knowledge will educate young singers and promote satisfying choral and soloistic opportunities. Student colleagues will be supportive of each other in their vocal pursuits, recognizing that each instrument and experience is unique. Healthy competition through state and regional competitions will help measure their talents and expose them to their peers within the region.

The UW vocal education will provide performance opportunities through studio classes, joint and solo recitals, Convocation performances, choral ensembles, staged operas and musical theatre productions, and scenes programs. Additionally, the student will enjoy exposure to established vocal talent in the form of master teachers and internationally recognized performers brought to campus for recitals and master classes.

Support is available for Vocal Arts students through ample scholarship opportunities.

Vocal Scholarship Information

Priority for vocal scholarships is given to students who declare a music major.  Exceptions are given to non-majors who display exceptional talent or if there is an ensemble need.  Scholarship awards may be up to full tuition and lesson fees.

Scholarship recipients are expected to perform in two designated music department ensembles every semester, and must enroll in private vocal instruction.

Dates for scholarship auditions will be announced in September 2003.

Live auditions are strongly encouraged.  Students should be prepared to sing two selections from memory.  Both may be in English.  At least one of the selections should be in the “classical” style.  You may choose a “standard” from the musical theatre repertoire for one of your selections.  (Students are discouraged from choosing a musical theatre piece that is rock, R & B, or country in style.)  Carefully choose repertoire that displays your current vocal abilities.

An accompanist will be provided for the audition.  (Students are strongly discouraged from bringing a pre-recorded tape of their accompaniment.)  Once an audition date and time have been assigned, you will be contacted regarding a rehearsal time.

In lieu of a live audition, students may submit a high-quality video or audiocassette tape for consideration (video is preferred.

Applicants must also submit a Department of Music Scholarship Application form.
