Brazilian pianist Rúbia Santos has been newly appointed Assistant Professor of Piano/Collaborative Artist at the University in Wyoming

Brazilian pianist Rúbia Santos has lectured and performed as soloist and collaborative pianist in the Americas, Europe, and China.  The Frankfurter Algemeine Zeitung stated: "The audience was not only astonished by Ms. Santos's provocative pianism, but also by her enthusiastic temperament…." Ms. Santos has premiered piano works dedicated to her and is strongly devoted to performing and researching music by twentieth-century and contemporary Brazilian composers.  Her compact-disc recording, "A Brazilian Collection," with trumpeter Luis Engelke has been highly praised for its invigorating and innovative repertoire.  In 2006, Ms. Santos recorded with violist Juan-Miguel Hernandez, the Sphinx Competition gold award winner, given the world premieres of the Sonatas for Viola and Piano by American composer Paul Chihara and Brazilian composer Edmundo Villani-Côrtes.  Since 2005, she and Portuguese pianist Alexandra Mascolo-David have partnered in the BelleDonne piano duo, dedicated to performing music by Northern and Latin American composers.  Most recently, Ms. Santos and mezzo-soprano Melanie Ohm formed Duo Braziliana, devoted to the performance and research of Brazilian Art Song. 

Her recent engagements include performances, master classes, and coaching at several venues, among them: The Gilmore’s “Keys to Education” programs, KeysFest and Piano Camp; the Latin American Music and Art Festival and Midland Symphony Orchestra opera season in Michigan; AIMS summer opera program in Graz, Austria; Brazilian Literature Institute in Arizona; Plymouth Chamber Music Festival in Massachusetts; and Bach Music Festival in Peru.  In 2006, Ms. Santos was the artist in residence for the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra and Gilmore Keyboard Festival Partner School in Michigan, presenting Brazil-Piano Style. She is a recipient of many prizes and awards in the field of solo and collaborative piano and has participated in several research projects dealing with Brazilian art music.

Ms. Santos is an active member of the Mediterranean Studies Association, College Music Society, and Music Teachers National Association.  Prior to her new appointment, she was assistant professor and director of the piano accompanying program at Central Michigan University.  Ms. Santos holds a piano artist diploma from the Musikhochschule in Cologne, Germany, and a master’s and doctor of musical arts degrees from Arizona State University.
