Opera in a Gym announces Fall 2006 Auditions:

Thursday, August 31st, beginning at 4:10 p.m. in FA 128 (Choir Room)

UW Opera Theatre produces full-scale productions in collaboration with the Department of Theatre and Dance http://www.uwyo.edu/th&d/ as well as one acts and opera scene productions in the Studio Theatre.  Recent operatic and musical theatre collaborative productions include Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera, Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Gondoliers, Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld, Loesser’s Guys and Dolls, Bock’s Fiddler on the Roof, and Sondheim’s Into the Woods.  Recent studio productions have included the scenes program “It’s in the Mail!,” and Purcell’s one act Dido and Aeneas.  In addition UW Opera Theatre has collaborated with the UW Symphony Orchestra in staged concert versions of Mozart’s Cosí fan tutte, and Donizetti’s Don Pasquale. 

Our new “Opera in a Gym” program is dedicated to providing a unique, interactive, and imaginative theatrical and musical experience for young audiences.  Since its inception, “Opera in a Gym” has performed for over 2,500 elementary school children throughout Wyoming and South Dakota.  Other productions have included Rutter’s The Wind in the Willows, the world premiere of Lee Alexander’s The Frog and the Princess, Davies’ Cinderella, and Pasatieri’s The Goose Girl.

Mission Statement
UW Opera Theatre is dedicated to providing a meaningful and imaginative theatrical and musical experience for all singers at the University of Wyoming. Majors in any discipline who demonstrate vocal beauty, dramatic skills and overwhelming enthusiasm are encouraged to participate. Its long-term goal is to make a significant artistic contribution to the University community, and to enhance the cultural vitality of the State.

Opera Theatre’s primary aim is to train students to blend the complex arts of movement and singing into a meaningful and communicative artistic “moment.”  We strive to instill a respect and dedication for all music theatre forms, and to inspire a strong sense of the artist’s role in society.
