 Assessment Plan: Goals and Outcomes
Programs in the Department of Modern & Classical Languages encompass the languages, literatures, and cultures of a wide range of non-English-speaking communities. Hence the Department plays an important role in promoting international understanding and the internationalization of the UW curriculum.
Majors in the Department should attain three learning goals as they complete their degrees. For each goal, we have identified one or more learning outcomes, each representing something tangible which the student should know or be able to do as a result of completing one of our undergraduate programs.
Learning Goal I
To attain proficiency in another language in all four of the basic skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
Learning outcomes
- Students will demonstrate proficienty in conversation.
- Students will demonstrate reading comprehension of texts written in the language.
- Students will produce grammatical, idiomatic compositions in the target language.
Learning Goal II
To gain understanding of other cultures.
Learning outcomes
- Students will gain essential knowledge about the history, traditions, customs, and ways of thinking of at least one other culture.
- Students will demonstrate understanding of works of literature read in the original language.
Learning Goal III
To develop skills in research, critical thinking, analysis, and writing on subjects appropriate to the field of study.
Learning outcome
- Students will produce well-reasoned and clearly articulated research papers on subjects appropriate to their field.
