George William Hopper Law Library

LegalFerret:
A Brief Introduction and Instruction

LegalFerret is the Law Library’s web-based catalog. Available at http://lawferret.uwyo.edu, it is a fully-integrated, real-time system listing the holdings of the library. Some older collections are not yet in the system, but our commonly-used materials are all available.

Searching

From the Simple Search tab, users can initiate keyword searches with results ranked by relevance, or searchers may choose to use the Boolean search functions similar to most Internet searching. Search tips for each type of search are at the bottom of the search screen.

Under the Advanced Search tab, there is an option to use a menu-driven search to develop more complicated searches. This is done using drop down menus and Boolean operators.

Databases

By clicking on the Articles & Reference Materials button in LegalFerret, users may access the commercial databases to which the library subscribes. Most databases are available from any computer within the law school and can also be accessed remotely with a UWYO username and password.

Our comprehensive collection of databases is broken up into the categories of Articles, Citators, E-Books, General Primary Law, and Looseleafs. Clicking on the icon will take you to a database description including access options. An A-Z list of databases is also available.

Patron Records

Patrons can view their check-out records and the status of hold requests as well as renew materials online by clicking the Patron button and entering last name and social security number.

University Libraries and Other Catalogs

By selecting the UW Libraries tab, users may access other campus libraries' databases where search techniques are similar. The University Libraries have a number of other commercial databases accessible from their catalog by clicking the Articles & Databases link. Anyone using a computer connected to the university server can link to these resources
