General Description

The law library collection covers three floors in the UW Law Library building. This collection includes state and federal cases and statutes, federal administrative rules and some agency decisions, legal digests and encyclopedias, legal looseleaf services, citators and legal indexes, treatises on a wide range of legal subjects, and selected government documents. Over 1000 periodicals are received by the UW Law Library, ranging from practitioner-oriented bar journals to scholarly law reviews.

Maps and other handouts on how to use the library are located outside the reference office.

Library Arrangement

First Floor
Reporters, treatises (books), and reference materials;

Second Floor
Government documents, Wyoming materials, and law reviews;

Third Floor
Older volumes and outdated materials.

Specific locations and call numbers for our collection can be searched on the three computers in the reference area. There are also public computers on each floor of the library. Search instructions are on the computer screen.

You may find a location code in the library catalog for some titles. The shelf location codes indicate the floor (M=Main, B=Basement and S=Second), the direction (E=East, W=West, S=South and N=North) and the range number where the item is located. The United States Reports location code, for example, is M-S-1. This means these reporters are on the Main floor, South side of the room, beginning on range 1.

Computer Access

The law library subscribes to both WESTLAW and LEXIS, computerized legal information retrieval systems. Our contract limits use of these services to faculty, students, and staff of the law school. Passwords are assigned to all incoming law students.

The library also subscribes to CALI exercises (Computer Assisted Legal Instruction). Available at www.cali.org, this site accesses electronic tutorials for a wide variety of legal topics. A student password is required. We also have CALI CD’s available to students and faculty free at the circulation desk.

The library is part of the campus wireless network so the Internet can be accessed from laptops and public terminals throughout the building.

Study Carrels

Individual study carrels are assigned to law students by the Potter Law Club through a lottery system. Third year students have first choice, followed by second and then first year students. The library has no part in assignment of study carrels.

All carrels have electricity, and those on the main and second floors have active data ports for internet connectivity. Cables can be checked out at the Circulation Desk.

Treatises and periodicals may be checked out of the library for four weeks at a time. Reporters and statutes may be checked out to carrels or faculty offices. Digests, looseleaf services, citators, and other reference books should be used in the area where they are shelved.
