The College of Law has partnered with the College of Agriculture and others to put on a timely and important conference on food issues affecting consumers. The conference is set for September 24 and 25, 2009, and will be held in the Wyoming Union on the main campus of the University of Wyoming.
An exciting program is being planned for this year’s conference, and will include subthemes of “Food Sustainability and Security Practices,” “Food Safety v. Food Freedom,” and “Food Fight: Nutrition and Health Choices.” Speakers will include Donna Byrne, Food Law Professor from William Mitchell Law School; Sandra Eskin, a Food Safety Policy Attorney for the Pew Charitable Trusts project at Georgetown University; Devin Koontz of the Federal Food and Drug Administration’s Denver District Office; Garry Auld of Colorado State University; Melea Press of the UW College of Business; Stephanie Anderson, College of Arts and Sciences, Ed Bradley, Enette Larson-Meyers, and Warrie Means, UW College of Agriculture; representatives of the Wyoming Department of Health and Agriculture; Curt Ellis, co-producer of the documentary “King Corn”; Tim Burkink, University of Nebraska-Kearney; and Dee Pridgen, UW College of Law Associate Dean and Carl M. Williams Professor of Law and Social Responsibility, and noted author on consumer law issues, among others.
On Thursday night, there will be a showing of a food-related documentary, [either King Corn or Food, Inc.] on campus at the College of Agriculture auditorium.
Each afternoon the conference will feature tours. On Thursday, the group will go to a local community supported agriculture farm (Grant Farms, Ft. Collins, Colorado), and Morning Fresh Dairy (also in Colorado). On Friday afternoon, the tour goes to the UW meat lab, the Laramie local farmers market, the university students’ sustainable garden project, a local food co-operative, and other locations.
