The Pence & MacMillan Client Counseling Competition provides an opportunity for law students to develop valuable skills interacting with and proposing solutions for clients. Each team of two attorneys is given a fact pattern and another law student poses as the client. The team then interviews the client and tries to extract the factual information, the client’s problem and desired resolution. The team then applies their counseling skills and devises a preliminary summary of the client’s legal position and the client’s possible actions. The competition emphasizes communication and other interpersonal skills essential to sound representation of clients. Local attorneys, psychologists and counselors act as judges to the local competition. The Laramie law firm of Pence & MacMillan sponsors the intra-school competition. The Regional Client Counseling Competition is sponsored by the Law Student Division of the American Bar Association.
