Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education
(WICHE)

WICHE programs include the Professional Student Exchange (PSEP), the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE), the Western Regional Graduate Program (WRGP), and the Scholars Program (not presently funded). These programs give Wyoming residents to access to programs at institutions in other participating states, often at reduced tuition.

The WUE program is administered through the University of Wyoming Admissions Office for students wishing to attend the University of Wyoming. For Wyoming residents desiring to attend another school in the WICHE group, please contact the Admissions Office of that school.  Also see http://wue.wiche.edu/ for information.

For information on WRGP, please contact the WICHE Certifying Office (University of Wyoming, College of Health Sciences, 110 and 112 Health Sciences Center, 307-766-3499 or 307-766-6704) or visit http://wrgp.wiche.edu/.

PSEP is administered through the Wyoming WICHE Certifying Office (University of Wyoming, College of Health Sciences, 110 and 112 Health Sciences Center, 307-766-3499 or 307-766-6704).   See also http://www.wiche.edu/sep/PSEP/.

Professional Student Exchange Program
(PSEP)

PSEP provides Wyoming residents access for out-of-state professional programs that are not available in Wyoming. If accepted and supported (support is highly competitive and is not guaranteed), students pay a reduced tuition – usually resident tuition at public institutions or reduced tuition at private schools.  The tuition is based on the costs at the attending institution, not the University of Wyoming resident tuition rate.  The State of Wyoming pays a standard support fee to the admitting school for educational services being offered to our residents.  Support is offered during the professional program only.  The length of the support varies according to the professional field.  The professional programs and the length of support are listed below:

  •  Dentistry – four academic years
  •  Medicine – four academic years
  •  Occupational Therapy – two academic years
  •  Optometry – four academic years
  •  Osteopathic Medicine – four academic years
  •  Physical Therapy – three academic years
  •  Physician Assistant – 24 months
  •  Podiatry – four academic years
  •  Veterinary Medicine - four academic years

For a list of participating schools in the various fields, visit the WICHE web page at WICHE PSEP

The application process has two parts:
1.  Apply for admission to the professional school(s) of choice using the application process they require
2.  Apply for certification as a Wyoming resident through the Wyoming WICHE Certifying Office no later than October 15 of the year prior to your anticipated enrollment date.

PSEP Residency Requirement – To be certified, applicants must be a legal resident of the State of Wyoming for a period of not less than three (3) consecutive years immediately prior to the anticipated date of entrance into a professional school.

The deadline for applying for certification is October 15. Applications are due one year before anticipated entrance to professional school. Deadlines are firm.  Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.

In conjunction with WICHE, Wyoming has established agreements with professional schools outside the WICHE compact area.  Students must meet the same certification requirements stated above.  Wyoming has the following agreements in the field of dentistry:

WY-DENT Dental Education Program

WY-DENT is a newly approved program between the University of Wyoming and the University of Nebraska College of Dentistry and Creighton University School of Dentistry.  The program annually reserves up to 10 seats for the program with a limit of 5 at each school.

Admission is a two step process.  Applicants must be certified residents of Wyoming. To be eligible for certification, the applicant or parent or guardian must be legal residents of the State of Wyoming for five continuous years immediately prior to enrolling at one of the dental contract schools. Applications for certification are available on this website and are due no later than October 15 of the year preceding the anticipated start date of dental school. Applicants apply for admission to the University of Nebraska and/or Creighton University.

Those accepted to the program will be required to sign a contract with the University of Wyoming that specifies the amount of the annual contract payment to the University of Wyoming and the terms of payback.  Participants pay a contract payment to the University of Wyoming (WY-DENT rate) for the four years of dental school and the state pays the educational costs to the relevant University for each student. Wyoming requires the participants to either pay back the money expended on their behalf plus interest or practice dentistry in Wyoming for three years.

WWAMI Medical Education Program

WWAMI is a contract program between the University of Wyoming and the University of Washington School of Medicine for medical education. The program annually reserves up to 16 seats for qualified Wyoming residents. Participants complete the first year of medical school on the University of Wyoming campus in Laramie and the second year at the University of Washington in Seattle. The third and fourth years are spent in clinical sites throughout the WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho).

Admission is twofold. Applicants must be certified residents of Wyoming. To be eligible for certification, the applicant or parent or guardian must be legal residents of the State of Wyoming for five continuous years immediately prior to enrolling at the University of Washington. Applications for certification are available on this website and are due no later than October 15 of the year preceding the anticipated start date of medical school. Applicants apply for admission to the University of Washington.

Wyoming applicants who are granted admission to the University of Washington are required to sign a contract with the University of Wyoming that specifies the amount of the contract payment and details the terms of payback.  Participants make a contract payment to the University of Wyoming (WWAMI rate) for the four years of medical school and the state pays the educational costs to the University of Washington for each student. Wyoming requires the participants to either pay back the money expended on their behalf plus interest or practice medicine in Wyoming for three years.

NOTE:  Offers of admission to the University of Washington School of Medicine are contingent upon agreement to participate in the WWAMI program and signing the contract.
