UW Health Expert to Participate in Statewide Telemedicine Conference

Aug. 13, 2008 -- The director of the Center for Rural Health Research and Education (CRHRE) at the University of Wyoming will participate in a teleconference with other state, regional and national leaders to help direct the development of statewide telehealth and telemedicine services.

Rex Gantenbein will be among the seven health experts who will lead discussions during the teleconference from 8 a.m.-noon Wednesday, Aug. 20. The teleconference, sponsored by the Wyoming Health Information Organization (WyHIO), will be available at various sites around Wyoming and is open to the public.

The mission of the CRHRE at UW is to enhance healthcare research and education in Wyoming and the region through the seamless integration of health-related databases and on-line information resources with a geographic information system.

The panel of experts also will include Larry Biggio, executive director of WyHIO; Jim Bush, Medicaid medical director at the Wyoming Department of Health; Dennis Ellis, executive director of the Wyoming Medical Society; Jonathan Linkous, CEO of the American Telemedicine Association; Brent Sherard, Wyoming Department of Health director and sttae health offic; and Wyoming Rep. Colin Simpson (R-Cody).

The teleconference will open with an update on the state of telehealth, or the use of telecommunications equipment and computing technology to support long-distance clinical healthcare, and telemedicine, or the exchange of clinical information via technology, in Wyoming.

The teleconference will be available in Afton, Basin, Casper, Cheyenne, Douglas, Evanston, Jackson, Laramie, Lusk, Newcastle, Rawlins, Thermopolis, Torrington and Worland.
