March 21, 2008 -- Prominent national and regional authorities on medicine, health care delivery and the law are scheduled to speak at a conference on health care reform and patient safety April 2-3 at the University of Wyoming Conference Center, 22nd Street and Grand Avenue in Laramie.

Michael Leavitt, United States Secretary of Health and Human Services, is among invited speakers to the conference, sponsored by the Law Review, a UW College of Law student organization. Dennis O'Leary, president of The Joint Commission that evaluates and accredits more than 15,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States, is among scheduled speakers.

"Clearly, there will be a diversity of opinions expressed by the speakers and we hope this will prompt dialogue and discussion," says Denise Burke, UW College of Law assistant dean. "The students expressed that health care reform is one of the most pressing social issues facing our country today. However, it is such a huge topic that they chose to concentrate on just one area in health care reform -- patient safety."

Registration deadline for the event is March 26. Registration instructions, a complete agenda, speaker biographies and other information can be found on the Web at outreach.uwyo.edu/conferences/healthcarereform/index.asp.

For more information, call (877) 733-3618, extension 2. The conference is sponsored by the UW colleges of Law and Health Sciences, the Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing, Common Good, and the Wyoming Healthcare Commission.
