Oct. 29, 2007 -- The University of Wyoming Counselor Education Department is exploring ways to collaborate with campus and statewide partners to identify and treat substance abuse issues in Wyoming.

In addition to working across departments to develop a curriculum aimed at recognizing the complexity of treating addictions, the UW Counselor Education Department is working with the Wyoming Department of Health to help meet the state's research needs and interests.

"This is a great opportunity for Wyoming resources to work together for a common goal," says Korin Schmidt, administrator for policy and planning for the state's Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services Division. "Just imagine what we could do to reduce substance abuse issues in Wyoming with the latest scientific information, coordinated information and community, state and UW collaboration.

"We're very excited to partner with the university where the results will have a positive impact on professional development while providing a much-needed service to Wyoming adults, children and families."

Longtime therapist and substance abuse counselor Jane Warren, who joined the UW counselor education faculty this fall, leads the university's efforts to improve educational opportunities.

"My goal is that when students leave the university they are better able to respond more effectively to the needs of the state," Warren says.

To accomplish her goal, Warren says UW will create a curricula that fosters a holistic approach to understanding and treating addictions.

Warren also hopes to use the UW Counselor Education Training Clinic (CETC) as a resource for residents who do not require intensive intervention and as a training site for practitioners across disciplines, including psychology, social work, psychiatric nursing and counselor education.
