2007 Alumni

Honored as the College of Health Sciences Alumni of the Year for 2007 are, from left, Tom Radosevich, Janice Stephens, Lanny Reimer, Marilynn Mitchell-Deiss, Cathy Binger, Carol Lindly. (David Martin was unable to attend.)

Alumni are invaluable assets of the College of Health Sciences. It was a pleasure to honor this year's recipients during a lunch held on October 12.

The School of Pharmacy honors MARILYNN H. MITCHELL-DEISS of Casper as its Alumna of the Year. Mitchell-Deiss graduated from UW with a BS in pharmacy in 1956 and began her career as a registered pharmacist in 1958. She has also played significant roles in state and national pharmaceutical organizations. She served on the Governor's Advisory Council on Drug and Alcohol Abuse from 1969 to 1978 and was a member of Wyoming's Board of Medical Examiners. In 1974, Mitchell-Deiss was the first woman ever elected president of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy and has been included in numerous publications, including Who's Who of American Women, The World Who's Who of Women, and Notable Americans. She has been a consistently generous supporter of the School of Pharmacy and maintains an active interest in archeology, having studied cultures around the world and beginning course work at Casper College this fall in anthropology/archeology.

In recognition of her ongoing support of the Division of Communication Disorders and the College of Health Sciences and her many contributions to speech-language pathology education, CATHY A. BINGER is the division's Alumna of the Year for 2007. Binger received her master's degree in speech pathology from UW in 1993 and completed her doctoral degree in communication sciences and disorders at Penn State in 2004 after working for eight years as a speech-language pathologist in four different states. Her primary research interests are twofold: developing and evaluating grammar development of children who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and teaching key communication partners such as parents and educators how to support the language development of young children who require AAC.

THOMAS E. RADOSEVICH, M.D., is recognized as the Alumnus of the Year for the Medical Education Program. Radosevich, a native of Rock Springs, Wyoming, attended medical school at Creighton University and graduated from UW's Family Practice Residency Program in June 2002. Shortly thereafter, he joined the Casper Family Medicine Residency Program, where he is now medical director and an adjunct faculty member. He has a natural and comfortable demeanor—a wonderful trait for a physician and teacher—and is very procedure oriented both in office and hospital settings. He and his wife, Tori, have four young ones who keep them busy at home.

The Division of Kinesiology and Health's Alumnus of the Year is DAVID T. MARTIN. Martin is currently one of eight senior sport physiologists working within the Department of Physiology at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, where he is responsible for providing sport science support to winter-sport athletes and cyclists. He is a successful researcher, having published his findings in numerous peer-reviewed journals and speaking at international conferences. He and his family enjoy snow skiing, bushwalking, surfing, and running.

The Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing (SON) has chosen JANICE E. STEPHENS as its 2007 Alumna of the Year. Stephens received her master of nursing degree from the SON in 1988 and continued her graduate education with an Ed.D. from UW in 1995. She was effective in her leadership role as dean of Northwestern Oklahoma State's School of Nursing, and her grant-writing efforts improved the working conditions of the school's faculty and increased resources for its students. She also served as the CEO of Wholistic Health Education Services in South Dakota and has contributed to the professional literature with works such as Wholistic Health: Self-Management Program Core Content. Stephens is currently the Whitney Endowed Chairperson of a unique partnership between the SON and Sheridan College to evaluate delivery systems of the current R.N./B.S.N. program with a potential of expanding course delivery methods to students in northeast Wyoming.

CAROL BURMAN LINDLY, a 1979 BSW graduate, is the 2007 Outstanding Alumna in the Division of Social Work. Having adopted three Korean children after giving birth to her daughter, Elizabeth, Lindly is ideally suited to her current position as director of the Wyoming Children's Society (WCS), a licensed, nonprofit adoption agency providing adoption services for Wyoming birth parents and adoptive families. Furthermore, she is an intelligent supervisor who inspires employee longevity and interacts positively and personally with the WCS volunteer board, staff, and casework consultants.

LANNY B. REIMER, M.D., is the 2007 Alumnus of the Year for the College of Health Sciences. Reimer graduated from UW with a bachelor's degree in pharmacy in 1972 and in 1976 graduated magna cum laude from the University of Colorado School of Medicine. In 1979, Reimer and his wife, Connie, returned to Newcastle, Wyoming, and established both the Upton Clinic (a model for interdisciplinary care that brought mental health, pharmacy, dental, and medical providers together under one roof) and the Cedar Hills Family Clinic to encourage health care providers to relocate and practice in Newcastle. Over the years, Reimer has been a steadfast supporter of the college, the university, and the School of Pharmacy and was named a Distinguished UW Alumnus in 2001. Reimer is also an untiring preceptor for the Medical Education Program. During student and resident rotations of one month to six weeks, Reimer involves students in every aspect of his life as a means of giving them a thorough understanding of what practicing in a rural environment entails.
