Alumni and Development

The College of Health Sciences 2009 Alumni of the Year
The College of Health Sciences considers its alumni invaluable assets as they conscientiously and professionally serve their communities and actively support programs of the college and the university. It was therefore a pleasure to honor this year's outstanding alumni during a reception held on October 9, 2009. The reception was also a time to honor Fay and Roy Whitney, Special Friends of the College, and Marcia Dale, a UW Distinguished Alumna.

SAMUEL "SAM" D. MILLAR, the Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing's 2009 alumnus of the year, earned his bachelor of science degree in nursing from UW in 2002 and his master of science in health sciences summa cum laude from the Touro University International in Los Alamitos, California, in 2005. He is currently a captain in the US Air Force with a distinguished record of service as a flight nurse. As a result of his "confidence, perseverance, determination, and ability to keep a cool head in tense situations," Sam earned commendations for his nursing care of combat casualties, White House personnel, and pediatric and geriatric patients. He has also taught nursing-related courses and served as preceptor for active-duty and reserve military nurses and medical technicians. Capt. Millar, who is currently stationed in Hawaii, was unable to attend because he was directing the medical relief effort to American Samoa.

DIANNE V. LOWE-CARPENTER, this year's outstanding alumna for the Division of Social Work, is the director of the Laramie County Community College (LCCC) Counseling Center in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and also teaches and advises LCCC students who may enter the division after receiving their associate's degrees. According to Mona Schatz, Professor and Director of the Division of Social Work, Diane is "just delightful and a great advocate of our program."

THEODORE "TED" HOY, the 2009 outstanding School of Pharmacy (SOP) alumnus,
received his bachelor's degree from UW in 1950. Ted is now a retired community pharmacist in Cheyenne and a respected "elder statesman" of UW's SOP. With other members of his family, he established and endowed the Otis L. Hoy Memorial Fund that brings distinguished speakers to the school during Pharmacy Weekend each fall and currently serves on UW's Campus Advisory Board and SOP's advisory and development committees.

MICKY E. ROUTSON, the Division of Communication Disorders' 2009 alumna of the year, received her master's degree in speech pathology from UW in 1983 and recently retired as the Albany County School District's speech-language pathologist. She is acknowledged by her colleagues as a concerned professional who cares so much about kids she even gave up time during summers to help struggling students.

GENTIAN SCHEER, M.D., a Lander native and member of UW's first WWAMI graduating class, is this year's Medical Education Program's outstanding alumna. Almost from the day she was born, Gentian has been dedicated to becoming a physician. After receiving her bachelor of science degree in physical education in 1997, she was accepted into the UW WWAMI medical education program and has now completed her three-year internal medicine residency at the University of Colorado Medical Center, Colorado Medical Center, Presbyterian Hospital, Rose Medical Center, and a veteran's administration hospital in Denver. The citizens of Wyoming now benefit from her years of hard work and study as she returns to practice internal medicine in her home state.

WILLIAM "BILL" T. LYONS, who completed his bachelor's degree in physical education at UW in 1973, is Kinesiology and Health's (K&H) outstanding alumnus for 2009. Bill is a member of K&H's adjunct faculty and is also UW's head athletic trainer.

MARCIA L. DALE, Ed.D.,was one of UW'sDistinguished Alumni for 2009. Dale retired in 2003 after serving as dean of the Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing since 1993 and rendering 42 years of dedicated service to UW. Outside the university, Dale was very active in state and national nursing associations and was one of the first three nurses from Wyoming to be accepted as a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. Students were always her first love, and in 2000, she and her husband, Bill, endowed a scholarship to help nursing students struggling to improve their lives by paying for tuition, books, and sometimes daycare.

The college began a new tradition by naming FAY and ROY WHITNEY Friends of the Year for 2009. The Whitneys have been extraordinary supporters of the college for many years, having named the School of Nursing in honor of Fay and establishing the Ralph and Fay Whitney Family Endowment in Nursing to bring nationally and internationally recognized nurse educators and practitioners to UW. As members of numerous advisory boards across the country, they also serve as ambassadors for UW and the college. Roy was unable to attend because he was being honored by his alma mater on that same day.
