Minor in Health Sciences


The minor in health sciences is designed for students who are interested in working in health care but not necessarily as a provider.  It will make students conversant with issues in health care, the terminology of the profession, health care informatics, social and political issues, disability awareness, ethics, and professionalism.  A capstone experience consisting of a senior seminar and an internship will provide students with the knowledge and experience necessary to be successful in the workplace. 

 This minor is especially useful for students seeking a career in

·         Health care administration (hospital, nursing home, etc.)
·         Health care marketing
·         Health psychology or counseling
·         Public health
·         Women's or children's health
·         Environmental health
·         Preprofessional study (medicine, dentistry, optometry, etc.)
·         Pharmaceutical sales
·         Or just have an interest in health care

Minor Requirements  (7 courses 21 hours total):

Topics and Issues in Health Care (3-1 Credit classes):

  • Topics in interdisciplinary Health Care (HSLC 1090)
  • Topics in interdisciplinary Health Care (HSLC 4020) 

A total of 3 credits with at least one credit at the 1000 level and one credit at the 4000 level.  Provides information concerning the breadth and variety of practices and opportunities under the heading of health care.

Health Care Language (3 credits): 

  • Medical Terminology (NURS 2240)

Provide students with vocabulary necessary to communicate with health care providers whom they might encounter in employment situations. 

Social Service and Community Health Elective (3 credits): 

  • Introduction to Aging Services (SOWK 4480)
  • Social Work with Diversee Populations (SOWK 4030)
  • Child Welfare Services (SOWK 3550)
  • Disabilities:  Supports and Services (WIND/SOWK 4020)
  • Social Work and Mental Health (SOWK 4030)

  • Community and Public Health Promotion (HLED 4050).   

Provide students with information about the needs and issues of specific populations and means of addressing these needs and issues.

Elective will encourage students to develop a broader understanding of considerations in health care, human development and/or the responsibilities of healthcare providers. Many of the electives require pre-requisites.  It will be the responsibility of students and advisors to assure students have the necessary preparation. This list will be constantly changing as courses are added and eliminated.  Substitutions require PRIOR approval.

Technology and Organization (3 credits): 

  • Health Care Informatics (HSLC 4700).

Provide students with an understanding of the application and potential of technologies for organizing and managing health care.

Capstone component (6 credits):

  • Internship (3 hours of HSLC 4985)
  • Interdisciplinary Seminar in the Health Sciences (HSLC 4970).

Provide students with experiences in the field and the opportunity to reflect upon and integrate information gained in other coursework.   Students are expected to complete their internship and seminar in their senior year after completing the majority of the coursework for the minor. 

Checklist


Academic Standards

At least 12 credit hours in a minor must be from courses that are not being counted toward the student's major. A 2.5 GPA, with no individual course below a C, is required for courses applied to the minor.
