PURPOSE:
Transcribe medical or surgical dictation within twenty-four hours; transcribe and type medical records, letters or reports using electronic, shorthand or speedwriting techniques; proof and edit copy for correct medical terminology, grammar, syntax usage, and sentence structure.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Transcribe patient histories, physical examinations, and follow-up visit histories.
Type consultation notes on referral patients, operative procedures, initial evaluations, office visit summaries, comprehensive diagnostic evaluations, referral letters and other correspondence.
Proofread and edit transcription, medical records and statistical sheets for completeness and accuracy.
Attach dictation to patient charts and maintain charts as required.
Operate office machines including computers, dictation equipment, scanners, fax, and copier machines.
SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:
Notify supervisor for supply/equipment purchase or repair orders.
Assist with maintaining filing system of medical records including filing, purging, and creating patient records/charts, as directed.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Standard office/clinic environment; no major sources of discomfort. Regularly exposed to video terminal displays and repetitive keyboarding. Some positions may work in confined areas. Occasional exposure to airborne diseases or biological hazards.
