PURPOSE
Manages the care and feeding of livestock for agricultural research and development programs.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Formulate feed rations; provide proper nutrition for livestock.
Identify diseased and/or injured livestock; perform prescribed treatment.
Maintain inventory of supplies and feed; assist with purchases and budgeting for ranch/farm operations, as directed.
Assist faculty, staff and student researchers as required.
Detect estrus cycle and artificially inseminate female livestock.
Inspect and confine pregnant livestock; wash, clip and assist animals in preparation for and delivery of offspring.
SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:
Clean, maintain and sanitize buildings and grounds utilized by livestock.
Perform animal judging and classing.
Groom, clip and trim animals for exhibition.
Keep accurate records pertaining to ranch/farm operations including pasture utilization, facility maintenance, weight, breeding and feeding records.
May perform work in specialized areas such as livestock branding, shearing, vaccination, cow milking, castration, semen collection and/or breeding.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Farm environment; constant moving of up to 100 pounds; regular exposure to vapors, fumes, dust, and noise; subject to mechanical, chemical, electrical, and other hazards associated with livestock care. May be exposed to fire or explosives; some work is done in confined areas.
