UW to Host Symposium on Global Competition for Energy

Feb. 16, 2009 -- The global competition for energy will be the theme of a University of Wyoming-sponsored symposium Thursday, March 5, at Sheridan College.

The symposium begins at 2 p.m. in Room 136 of the Whitney Building. The event, sponsored by the UW International Studies Program, School of Energy Resources (SER) and History Department, is free and open the public.

Timothy Considine an SER faculty member and a professor of energy economics, will deliver the keynote address, "Peak Oil: Hype or Reality?" The symposium's other panelists will be Jean Garrison, director of the UW International Studies Program; Raymond Plank, founder and retired chairman of the Apache Corporation, an independent energy company that explores for, develops and produces natural gas, crude oil and natural gas liquids; and Ahad Abdurahmonov, an M.A. Candidate in the UW Department of Political Science.

Garrison says the symposium is motivated by three simple but interrelated ideas: The issue of energy security, how to address the looming global energy crunch and how the world's response will determine future prospects for cooperation or conflict.

"As an energy-producing state, Wyoming has a direct stake in the emerging volatile trends in the global energy market and a possible voice in determining solutions to the energy crisis," Garrison adds.
