Graduate School Applications: Deadline for full consideration is February 5 |
The diverse departmental courses provide students with a complete and well-rounded experience in history.
Department of History faculty members have expertise in numerous fields. Specialties include the history of Europe (ancient, medieval and modern), Latin America, Asia, and United States (colonial, 19th century, 20th century). Faculty also have topical specialties in such areas as the history of the American West, Native American history, environmental and legal history.
Faculty are distinguished in many research areas, but they also are recognized for their teaching excellence. History faculty have received numerous teaching awards in recent years.
Students majoring in history have the opportunity to develop their own academic program. Also, students have options in practical applications of history through the department's public history program, and many history majors carry a minor in a related field. All faculty participate in advising students in their academic programs. Each student is assigned an advisor when he/she declares a history major or minor.
Graduates with degrees in history have gone on to careers in
teaching, museum administration, public service, and private industry. Also,
numerous graduates continue on to graduate programs, both at UW and
elsewhere. Two required courses, Hist 3020 (Historical Methods) and
Hist 4030 (Department Pro Seminar) are designed to refine students abilities
to think, research, and write historically.
