Corporate and Foundation Giving

INVESTING IN UW

Management of Grants
In May 1998, the Trustees of the University of Wyoming and the University of Wyoming Foundation established a Memorandum of Understanding that recognized the UW Foundation as the principal fund-raising organization for the University and mandated that the Foundation shall deposit and retain all gifts and donations made to the University directly or to the Foundation for the use and benefit of the University. Within the UW Foundation, the Office of Corporate and Foundation Giving encourages strong, continuing support of the University of Wyoming from local and national businesses, corporations, and foundations.

Gifts and grants from these entities are deposited, managed, and reported by the UW Foundation, in accordance with CASE Management Reporting Standards,  when at least one of the following criteria applies:

  • The award supports a scholarship, stipend, or fellowship with the recipient selected by the University.

  • The award provides discretionary support for a department or program.

  • The award is for an endowment.

  • The award is restricted to a specific UW endeavor that provides no tangible benefit for the funder.

  • The award is charitable in nature.

UW Office of Research and Economic Development
The University of Wyoming Office of Research and Economic Development works with faculty, staff, and students in all seven colleges and UW’s outreach programs to link research, technology transfer, and economic development efforts to enhance federal, state and private sector support for faculty and graduate student scholarship.  External awards are managed and reported by the Research Office and deposited in a Contract & Grants account (prefix #5) when:

  • The funder is a government (local, county, state, or federal) agency.
  • The funder is a non-governmental agency and at least one of the following criteria applies:

  •
    • The work results in specific commercial value for the funder
    • Proprietary results belong to the funder, in whole or in part, after the work is completed.
    • The funder receives tangible outputs.  (Tangible results  include patents or research results that help a company manufacture or sell its product.  Donor recognition, public acknowledgement, or required written reports are not considered tangible outputs).
    • The grant requires a major equipment match from UW.
    • The grant involves externally mandated regulatory activities (e.g., human subjects, biosafety, radiation safety, animal car).

University Policies
All proposal require institutional approval through the “greensheet” process.

All gifts and awards are subject to approval by the UW Board of Trustees and are reported to the Trustees and to other internal and external constituents.
