April 10, 2008 -- The John P. Ellbogen Foundation has donated $260,000 for an endowment to support the Wyoming Geriatric Education Center at the University of Wyoming's College of Health Sciences.
The donation will be matched by the state to total $520,000. The funds will support UW efforts to address the state's challenges and opportunities regarding its aging population. It will be used to develop a cadre of retired health professionals, bring in a certificate program for nursing staff, integrate geriatrics and gerontology themes to UW courses and develop faculty expertise in geriatrics and gerontology.
"The endowment will enhance the college's long-term interest in geriatric education for UW undergraduate and graduate students and healthcare professionals in the region. It will further our commitment to respond to the challenges of a rapidly aging population," says Robert Kelley, College of Health Sciences dean. "By providing training to health professionals who will care for Wyoming's growing aging population, the funds will directly improve the care of Wyoming's older citizens."
