On September 12, 2006, at the Ninth Annual University of Wyoming Fall Convocation, Helga Haub received UW’s highest award, the honorary doctor of laws degree.

Haub was enthusiastically applauded by UW faculty, staff and administrators in attendance. “I am accepting this honor in the name of my late mother-in-law, Elizabeth Haub, who had the idea as early as 1968, to establish a foundation for environmental law and environmental policies. Over the years, this foundation has provided financial assistance for projects which have been vital for the development of international and environmental law and policies,” said Helga.

Helga and her husband, Erivan Haub, are widely known for their philanthropy and their family-owned company, the Tengelmann Group, which provides textile and nonfood discounting, do-it-yourself home-improvement supplies, drugstores, and food retailing in 15 countries.

The Haubs, originally from Germany, own a ranch in Sublette County, Wyoming, where they have summered for the past 21 years. They have been members of the William D. Ruckelshaus Institute of Environment and Natural Resources (RIENR) Board since its inception in 1994.

In 2004, the university’s School of Environment and Natural Resources was renamed the Helga Otto Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources, in recognition of a $3 million (doubled to $6 million through a state match) gift from Helga and her husband, Erivan. The gift provides a financial base for UW to offer stronger academic and experimental education to ENR students.

“It was only natural for my family and for me to do the next step and find the school interested in promoting environmental awareness to the next generation growing...our love for this great state of Wyoming and our admiration for the Ruckelshaus Institute and UW were the perfect match,” said Helga.
