The UW Foundation Planned Giving Office – How Can We Help?

As the new year unfolds, many of us spend time planning for the year to come. If you are in sales, you might be planning your travel schedule and looking over your prospects for 2010. If you are in retail, likely you are looking at your marketing plan and the latest products to offer your customers. Here at the UW Foundation planned giving office, we have spent the first couple weeks of the new year planning as well—developing our marketing and communications plan, scheduling speaking engagements, and contemplating how we can better serve our alumni, friends, and allied professionals. In that regard, this edition of Planned Giving Essentials will focus on some of the many complimentary services that we offer as added-value to you and your planning team.

Literature and Website

Because our organization is fairly large, we have a sizeable library that covers just about every topic in estate and charitable planning. We have everything from booklets and pamphlets to research materials and references—if there is an answer to a question, we can find it. Feel free to contact us at any time for additional information on any topic in this complex area. Because we have the luxury of devoting one staff person entirely to planned giving, we have the ability to respond quickly and efficiently to most any inquiry.   In addition to hard-copy materials, you can access our comprehensive website of valuable planned giving information. From true accounts of others who, through planned giving, have helped students achieve their dreams, to resources that help you plan your estate, to research materials and references for professional advisors—the UW Foundation Planned Giving website has it covered. I encourage you to spend some time exploring the website and the resources offered at uwyo.giftlegacy.com.

Illustrations

We are happy to talk through and run illustrations on your—or your clients’—personal situation. It is often time-consuming and costly for you and/or your advisors to compare all of the alternatives available. With PG Calc, a planned giving calculator, we are able to run any number of different scenarios in a matter of minutes. In addition, we can compare and contrast various plans and even suggest things you may not have considered. If you are not comfortable contacting us directly, we also have a calculator available on our website that allows you or your advisor to run gift illustrations for almost every scenario.

Sample Documents and Language

We have compiled a library of samples of charitable trusts, life estate agreements, and other charitable planning documents that we are happy to provide to you and your advisors. In addition, we have suggested language for a charitable bequest through a Will or Revocable Trust that we supply to attorneys so that your documents contain the proper legal designation and properly express your intent. For example, signing up for a charitable gift annuity is as simple as reviewing and signing a one-page agreement that we forward to you and your advisors whereby we agree to pay you or your loved ones a certain amount each year during the annuity term.

Legislative Updates and the Latest Planned Giving Strategies

The planned giving office at the UW Foundation receives monthly, weekly, and sometimes daily updates from the Planned Giving Design Center, the Partnership for Philanthropic Planning, Crescendo Interactive, PG Calc, the Sharpe Group, and others concerning the latest legislative developments that affect charitable and estate planning. These same vendors provide a continuous stream of information about the latest strategies. Often, we forward these releases and announcements to our group of allied professionals and others in the financial services industry in order to keep them apprised of the latest information. Please let us know if you would like to be added to those who receive these periodic updates.

Institutional Knowledge and Insight

Our most valuable service is working with you so that your vision is implemented. We work with department heads, professors, and administrators across campus to design and structure your planned gift so that it follows your intent and helps your area of interest as effectively as possible. In addition, our experience and institutional knowledge allows us to offer suggestions and to let you know if something is just not going to work. We can also give you insight on current and future fundraising priorities on campus. It is often helpful to bring the “campus expert” into the fold during the initial conversations to help shape things in accordance with your intentions, something we are happy to do.

Thank you for your continued and outstanding support. We welcome your thoughts, suggestions, and feedback so that we can better serve you and/or your clients in the coming year. We look forward to working with you in 2010 and beyond.
