Welcome to FIGS!
Freshman Interest Groups are living and learning communities. First-time freshmen at UW are invited to join a FIG, where they'll take three or four designated sections of linked or clustered courses for a semester, while living on a 'designated' floor in the UW residence halls with other FIG students enrolled in the same course sections.
FIGs are a friendly and fun way to begin life at UW. Instead of making your way through those first research papers, final exams, and study sessions alone, you'll be part of a community of learners, yet you'll maintain the flexibility to be independent too.
FIG Students tend to have:
  • Improved retention rates (they stay in school!)
  • Improved class performance (higher GPAs)
  • Better connections with faculty
  • Better connections with other students (academic and social network)
  • A better sense of the campus as a community
  • Better knowledge of campus opportunities

Choosing a FIG is easy! Look through the choices and pick one that sounds interesting to you. FIGs are generally designed to meet University Studies requirements, so even if you decide on a completely different major, most of the courses you've completed as part of the FIG will still satisfy USP requirements.
