Teacher and Counselor Information

By applying to the Energy Summer Institute, you have an opportunity to:

take part in an exceptional summer program relating to the energy industry.
spend two weeks on the University of Wyoming campus in Laramie while receiving a $1,500 stipend.
participate in small, informal classes with 16 well-rounded, 9th-grade students and 3 fellow teachers and/or counselors.
earn PTSB credits.
study with outstanding university faculty.
meet new people in a relaxed, university atmosphere.
receive PTSB credits. SER will be working on qualifying the program for UW graduate school credit.

Wyoming and the nation are facing both exciting and daunting energy challenges in the coming decades. One could argue that the development of new conventional energy sources as well as alternative and renewable energy, and the looming issues associated with the global effects of CO₂ and other greenhouse gases, represents a technological challenge the likes of which has yet to be encountered by humanity. The Energy Summer Institute is designed to provide you with superb exposure to the challenging energy problems facing the world - and the possible solutions on the horizon. Moreover, your participation affords you the opportunity to bring this unique experience back to your schools and help engage K-12 with Wyoming's energy future.

Teachers' Workshop

Dr. Joseph Stepans, Professor Emeritus from the Department of Secondary Education in the College of Education will present a workshop for teachers on how to incorporate math and science concepts into their classrooms. Teachers from the 2007 program will be invited to participate and share their experiences.

Who are the participants?

Sixteen well-rounded, 9th-grade students and four teachers or counselors are selected to participate in the Institute. Participants are selected by the School of Energy Resources Academic Council.

Who pays for the program?

Payment for room, board, and instructional supplies. The SER also pays for all group activities during the Summer Institute including field trips. Participating teachers and counselors will receive a $1,500 stipend from the SER.

Who are the chaperones?

Students are chaperoned by 4 staff counselors hired by the School of Energy Resources. Counselors are also responsible for coordinating student activities. While you will be housed in the residence halls, you will not be expected to act as a chaperone during the Institute.

What are the living and meal accommodations?

You will be housed in the UW residence halls during the Institute. Rooms are singles and feature one bed, a study desk, ample closet space, telephone, and laundry rooms.

During the Institute, you receive three meals a day in the Washakie Dining Center. Included daily is a choice of nutritious entrees, low-fat and vegetarian selections, hot breakfast, salad bar, deli bar, fresh fruit, and a wide selection of desserts and frozen yogurt in a food-court atmosphere.

What are the parking accommodations?

A parking permit will be issued to each teacher so you can park your vehicle in the residence hall parking lots.
