Outreach Programs
The Writing Center in the Classroom
The Writing Center offers a limited number of outreach programs on a first-come, first-served basis. To schedule one of these programs, visit the Writing Center or call Peg Garner at 766-5004 to make an appointment.
To serve UW faculty who use writing in their courses, the Writing Center offers introductions, classroom presentations, and workshops.
Writing Center introductions are ten- to fifteen-minute talks that familiarize students and instructors with Writing Center services and resources. Classes of fewer than twenty-five students meet in the Writing Center; instructors may arrange an introduction by calling 766-5250. To accommodate large classes, a member of the Writing Center staff will visit the classroom.
Introductions provide students with the following information:
- Who uses the Writing Center
- What happens during a typical Writing Center conference
- What kinds of help the Writing Center provides
- How conferencing in the Writing Center is related to coursework
Introductions should be scheduled at least ten days in advance to accommodate both the instructor and the Writing Center.
Writing Center presentations are collaborative efforts between instructors and the Writing Center. Presentations focus on specific writing assignments or questions. Instructors work with the Writing Center to design a presentation that integrates the assignment goals with strategies for achieving those goals.
Presentations may focus on any stage of the writing process. Instructors may, for example, consult with the Writing Center on the following aspects of writing:
- Topic generation
- Research direction
- Focus
- Development of ideas
- Organization
- Documentation
Presentations should be scheduled at least two weeks in advance to accommodate both the instructor and the Writing Center.
Like Writing Center presentations, workshops are collaborative efforts between an instructor and the Writing Center. Workshops are appropriate when students are engaged in the writing process and are ready to share their writing with peers in the classroom. Instructors work with the Writing Center to plan when and how to conduct a writing workshop. A consultant from the Writing Center will attend and co-direct these workshops.
Workshops are useful when students are involved in the following aspects of writing:
- Focusing and developing ideas
- Supporting ideas
- Organizing research
- Seeking audience response
- Editing drafts
Workshops should be scheduled at least two weeks in advance to accommodate both the instructor and the Writing Center.
