New location for 2008-2009
During the remodeling of Coe Library, the ECTL has temporarily relocated to the Engineering Building. To find us, enter the main south entrance, head downstairs, and turn left. All of our offices are located in the west hallway of the basement with the main office in EN 1070. We expect to move to our new space in the ILLC in Summer 2009.
About the ECTL
The Ellbogen Center for Teaching and Learning (ECTL), established in the fall of 1991, is administered from the Office of Academic Affairs. The mission of the ECTL is to provide leadership, advocacy, support, faculty development, and instructional services for teaching and learning excellence. Formerly known as the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE), the center was renamed to honor John P. "Jack" Ellbogen on September 6, 2001. The ECTL oversees the Writing Center, Instructional Computing Services, and Instructional Media Services, and provides consulting and class observations. The Learning Resource Networks (LeaRN), an important partner, is also located with the ECTL.
The ECTL serves all members of the university teaching and learning community and depends upon
the active participation and partnerships among them. ECTL programs and services are available at
no charge. The ECTL sponsors a full variety of programs during the course of a year. Programs include
technology and teaching workshops, seminars for new faculty and graduate students, fall and spring
colloquia events, book discussions, and grant projects. We invite you to contact us about active
collaboration on programming and co-sponsoring events.

Grant Programs
Assessment Grants - In partnership with the UW Assessment Office, the ECTL provides small grants for departments and programs to advance their assessment projects. For the 2008-2009 academic year, proposals for $750 are welcome at any time until funds run out. Click here for more information.
Kaiser Ethics Grants - With $75,000 from the Kaiser Foundation, the Philosophy Department and the ECTL are jointly sponsoring a three-year project to infuse the teaching of ethics into courses across the disciplines. The 2008-2009 cycle is the final year of this program. Seven awards of $3000 each are given to faculty from a variety of departments working in cohorts to develop ethics content and assignments for their courses. The call for proposals for the third and final year of this project occurs in fall 2008 with a proposal deadline of 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 8, 2008. Click here for more information.
Technology Grants - In 2008-2009, the ECTL and the Division of Information Technology are co-sponsoring grants for individuals and teams to develop innovative teaching with technology. The call for proposals occurs in fall 2008 for courses taught in 2009. Check our Web site in September for additional information.
