Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Ellbogen Center for Teaching and Learning?
The ECTL, established in the fall of 1991, is a university-wide program administered from
the Office of Academic Affairs. The mission of the ECTL is to provide leadership, advocacy, support, faculty
development, and instructional services for teaching and learning excellence. Formerly known as the
Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE), the ECTL was renamed after John P. "Jack"
Ellbogen on September 6, 2001.
Who is part of the ECTL and who does the ECTL serve?
The ECTL has a full-time director and full-time office associate senior. It oversees the Writing Center,
Instructional Computing Services, and Instructional Media Services.
The Learning Resource Networks (LeaRN), an important partner, is
also located with the ECTL. The ECTL serves all members of the university teaching and learning community and depends upon the
active participation and partnerships among them.
Where is the ECTL?
The ECTL is temporarily located in the basement of the Engineering Building.
The main office is housed
in EN 1070, the Writing Center in EN 1074, and Instructional Computing Services and Instructional Media Services
in EN 1090. LeaRN is located in EN 1091.
How may the ECTL benefit me and how may I participate in ECTL activities?
ECTL-sponsored events, programs, and projects are open to all personnel, including graduate students, who
contribute to the university's teaching mission. Information about ECTL events is
provided on our Web site and distributed widely, including
the faculty and staff listservs, university-wide flyers, posters, and the Branding Iron and Laramie Boomerang.
The Writing Center serves all writers at UW on any writing task. Instructional Computing Services provides consultation and training on incorporating instructional technology into the classroom. Instructional Media Services provides consultation on developing and producing instructional media using computing, audio/video, and a variety of other instructional techniques from the very traditional to the most advanced. LeaRN focuses on building partnerships between students and faculty to create dynamic learning environments. You may also participate in a number of ECTL workshops which are listed on our home page.
