Finding, Assessing, and Citing Sources
Friday, February 2, 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.
Jane Nelson, ECTL; Peg Garner, Writing Center; Cheryl Goldenstein, UW Libraries

The problems students have with finding and citing sources often stem from partial or mistaken ideas about research.  The workshop facilitators will identify several of the common difficulties students have with citation and offer suggestions for helping students overcome them.

Improving Writing Style
Friday, March 2, 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.
Jane Nelson, ECTL, and Peg Garner, Writing Center

Jane and Peg will first review terminology associated with common issues of mechanics, usage, and style (comma splice, parallel structure, passive voice, and so on).  They will then describe ways to help students edit to achieve clarity and eliminate wordiness.

Quantitative Reasoning
Friday, March 23, 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.**
Bob Mayes, Director, Science and Math Teaching Center

**This session was rescheduled for March 23.  The original date was March 30.

Quantitative reasoning includes areas such as quantitative literacy, numeracy, and mathematical literacy.  But QR is not limited to skills needed for citizens of a democratic society; it also includes reasoning and conceptual understanding required in STEM disciplines.  Lack of quantitative reasoning is one component of students' failure to enroll in or complete courses in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.  In this workshop, Bob will explore what QR is and how to teach it.
