Planning for Teaching


The end of spring semester invites reflection on a year's worth of teaching.  What went well in your classes, and what did not?  In this workshop series, we will help you plan for fall classes while these reflections are fresh in your mind.

Using Supplemental Online Courses To Enhance Teaching
Monday, May 14 from 10:00 a.m. to Noon

Even if you are meeting in a classroom, you can design online course components to enhance your teaching.  Robin Hill will provide ideas on how to incorporate online course tools for providing supplemental course materials, increasing participation and interaction, and assessing student learning. 

Introduction to Online Course Platforms at UW
Tuesday, May 15 from 10:00 a.m. to Noon

Robin Hill will discuss the basics of eCompanion, WebCT, and Course Studio.  Attendees will learn how to request and navigate a course shell, display a syllabus and post announcements, upload materials, and use discussion.  As times allows, participants will discuss exams and grading.

A Look at the Sakai Collaborative Platform
Wednesday, May 16 from 10 a.m. to Noon

Sakai is an open-source course management system that is suitable for extended web projects and collaborations, such as research, projects, and e-portfolios.  Robin Hill will show one or two example courses to demonstrate key facilities.
 

Engaging Student Learning
 

Planning Assignments
Wednesday, May 16 from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m.
AND Thursday, May 17 from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m.

Students learn a significant amount from out-of-class assignments like papers, research projects, case studies, or problem-based work.  Up-front planning for these assignments can prevent student and instructor frustration.  In this two-part workshop led by Jane Nelson, you will plan one or more assignments from start to finish.

Working with International Students
Thursday, May 17 from 10:00 a.m. to Noon

This workshop is aimed at helping teachers understand the special challenges ESL students face and investigating ways to assist these students.  Peg Garner and Shelly Norris will lead this session.  Peg will lead a discussion of the video Writing Across Borders, and Shelly will share her experiences working with international students.

Teaching Large Classes
Tuesday, May 22 from 10:00 a.m. to Noon

Jane Nelson will discuss a dozen or more strategies for motivating and engaging students in large classes.
