The ECTL is pleased to offer Planning for Teaching, a series of workshops designed to help you prepare for spring teaching.

1:00-3:00

Sharing the Responsibility for Providing Student Feedback (Jane Nelson) - Coe 307

Providing students with good feedback is equal in importance to providing good content, but this responsibility does not need to belong to the instructor alone. Learn several ways for students to get information about the quality of their learning from sources beyond the
instructor.

Monday, January 7

Tuesday, January 8
10:00 - Noon:  Online Media Resources (Andy Bryson) - Coe 307
Andy will provide a hands on session focusing on creation of audio and video resources for student learning using iTunesU for Podcast hosting.  Come with specific projects in mind. 

1:00 - 3:00:  Grading Assignments (Jane Nelson) - Coe 307
Develop specific ways to grade a variety of assignments, from multiple choice exams to writing assignments, that not only are efficient and fair but provide valuable feedback for improving learning.

Wednesday, January 9
10:00 - Noon:  Teaching Critical Reading (April Heaney) - Coe 307

Join April Heaney, LeaRN Director, and faculty from multiple disciplines to discuss strategies for better preparing students for active reading and critical analysis of college texts.

1:00 - 2:15:  Effective Classroom Presentations (Christi Boggs, Janet Corbett, and Robin Hill) - Coe 307

Learn how to make your PowerPoint presentations more effective as well as how to use alternative technology that is available for classroom presentations.

Thursday, January 10
Classroom Building Technologies (Andy Bryson/Gary Boulware) - Meet in the east side lounge
10:00 - 11:00:  Small Classes with a seating capacity of 50 or less
2:00 - 3:00:   Large Classes with a seating capacity of 50 or more
 

The IT Classroom Technology Manager and ECTL Instructional Services are offering hands on training and time to practice using the new instructional technologies in the Classroom Building.  Everyone scheduled to teach in the CR for the first time is advised to
register. All others welcome.

2:00 - 4:00:  Introduction to Online Course Platforms (Robin Hill)- Coe 307

Robin will discuss the basics of eCompanion, WebCT, and Course Studio.  Attendees will learn how to request and navigate a course shell, display a syllabus and post announcements, upload materials, and use discussions.  In the second part of the program,
participants will discuss exams, grading, and other topics that arise.

Friday, January 11

11:00 - Noon:  A Look at the Sakai Collaborative Platform (Robin Hill)- Coe 307
Sakai is an open-source course management system that is suitable for extended web projects and collaborations, such as research, projects, and e-portfolios.  Robin will show example courses to demonstrate key facilities.
