Introduction to Online Course Platforms
Wednesday, September 3rd, 8:00 - 9:30 a.m.
Engineering 1062 (from the main entrance, downstairs and to the right)
The basics of the online platforms that we offer for supplemental use: eCompanion and WebCT, with Course Studio and
WyoSakai covered as time allows. Attendees will see how to request and navigate a course shell, display a syllabus and post
announcements, upload materials, and carry on discussions. We will try to get to online grade maintenance and
quizzing, as well.
No registration necessary.

A brisk explanation of the various methods provided by UW for teaching online, their facilities, workflows, and
integration into your campus courses. For preparation, please see "Where can I get a website for my class or research
group?" in the Faculty Help questions at
the Instructional Computing Services website.

A Look at the Sakai Collaborative Platform
Monday, August 18th, 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. (light refreshments)
Engineering 1062 (from the main entrance, downstairs and to the right)
The new pilot platform WyoSakai offers the familiar online course tools such as file sharing, discussions, e-mail,
quizzes (with quick-create), and assignment submission, but also some other facilities such as wikis, polls,
podcasts, citation management for lengthy bibliographies, and lecture/lab/discussion sections. We will try to cover the
basics quickly, allowing exploration of these advanced features.

WyoSakai: Briefing, Debriefing, and Rebriefing
Monday, May 19, 8:30 - 10:00 a.m., Coe 307
Intended for instructors who are testing Sakai in our pilot program, for exchange of comments and
discussion of plans. Other faculty are invited as well.
Web 2.0 for Teaching

With Cass Kvenild, Leslie Rush, Rachel Watson, Debbie Beck,
Kaijsa Calkins, Diane Kempson, and Alan Buss.
What is the pedagogical potential of the web facilities commonly associated with the moniker "Web 2.0?"
These include wikis and blogs for collaborative writing, social networking sites like My Space and Facebook
for community-building, folksonomies for sharing references, podcasting for asynchronous lecture delivery,
and complex virtual worlds for simulations. Come and explore whether and how these web services can be put
to use for effective teaching. You are invited to bring your own laptops for interactive work; some computers
will be available to participants.
