Workshops on Instructional Computing
Note that we now hold sessions at, or near, our new location, Coe Library 510B.
Planning for Teaching (Spring 2010)
These sessions will be held in Coe Library the week before classes start (January 4-8, 2010), but times and places are still to be determined.
An Overview of WyoWeb and Course Websites
A brisk explanation of the various methods provided by UW for teaching online, their facilities and workflows, and integration into your campus courses, with emphasis on the default, Course Studio in WyoWeb. For preparation, please see "Where can I get a website for my class or research group?" in the Faculty Help questions at the Instructional Computing Services website.
Introduction to Online Course Platforms
The basics of the online platforms that we offer for supplemental use: eCompanion and WyoSakai. Attendees will see how to request and navigate a course shell, display a syllabus and post announcements, upload materials, and carry on discussions. We will try to get to online grade maintenance and quizzing, as well.
Special Features of WyoSakai
The open-source course platform has advanced and unique tools that may remain unexplored by many instructors. See a few of them demonstrated.
How to Not Use PowerPoint: Slidy and Its Friends
Just a tiny bit of HTML to set the stage, and then a tour of mechanisms for composing presentations that are simpler and more amenable to web display than is PowerPoint. We will show how to use the free tool Slidy.
Fall 2009
No registration is required for these events.
Web teaching novices are invited to work through the task of mapping teaching needs to online course facilities in order to design a simple course website that supplements classroom instruction. The platform will be WyoSakai, a rich environment, but we will limit ourselves to the basics, with a mapping from materials to tools that should work in any platform. You may wish to bring a list of your own course materials and activities.

Teaching With Sakai Innovation Award Winners
This annual award highlights noteworthy
teaching with course websites. Although Sakai is
the platform in use, the ideas apply to web teaching in
general. We will play a video of the award
acceptance talks by the two winners, who briefly show
their courses-- Andrea Crampton, Charles Sturt University (Australia),
"Introduction to Forensic Science," and Edith Sheffer,
Stanford University, "Germany and the World Wars,
1870-1990." Both lead their students through
the material via wikis and discussion to accomplish teaching
goals. This event is for pedagogical
inspiration only; no discussion or workshop is attached.
