Through interviews and original research, Jennifer Washburn describes how the pursuit of research profits has tainted the free exchange of ideas in universities.  The results and implications for American universities are unsetting:  compromised research, a loss of scholarly independence, the downsizing of teaching, and the erosion of the humanities.


Thinking in Pictures by Temple Grandin

Temple Grandin in a professor of animal science at Colorado State University who specializes in designing humane livestock handling facilities.  She is also autistic.  Grandin sees the world through pictures and credits this ability for her success in livestock facility design.  In Thinking in Pictures, she shares how her perceptions differ from those of verbal thinkers.

 

The Reluctant Mr. Darwin by David Quammen

In The Reluctant Mr. Darwin, Quammen acquaints the reader with the cultural, social, and individual context in which Darwin revealed his theory of evolution.  The author references Darwin's letters and notebooks to investigate two central questions:  How did Darwin develop his theory after returning from the Beagle voyage?  Why did he hesitate to announce his ideas?
