  Classroom Performance Systems

Classroom Performance Systems (CPS) provide an innovative technique for encouraging student participation in lectures or discussion-based courses.  "Clicker" systems allow instant feedback in the classroom.  The process is simple:  instructors pose questions, students respond via clickers, and data is collected on the instructor's computer via a receiver.  CPS software allows the instructor to view and evaluate student responses.

Hardware and Software Requirements

The University of Wyoming uses eInstruction as its CPS provider.  Faculty must acquire a receiver, keypad, and CPS software to use the system, while students must
purchase a keypad and an access code.  Instructors who are interested in using this technology should contact Scott Johnson at 766-5288 to arrange material acquisition, initial setup, and training.  Scott will register the instructor with eInstruction, and they will provide a starter kit that includes a receiver and keypad.  He will also install
the CPS software on personal laptops or office computers; CPS software is already available on all fixed classroom PCs.  Students can purchase response pads at the University Bookstore
or online at eInstruction.com for around $20.  They must also purchase a semester access code, at the bookstore or online, for $15-$20.  Instructors should pre-order clickers at the University Bookstore to ensure supply.

CPS Usage at UW

Instructors in a variety of disciplines are successfully using CPS in large and small classes.  They report two results:  student are more engaged and learn materials more efficiently.  Students have indicated that clicker systems encourage deeper discussion.

Classroom Performance Systems promote student engagement in a lecture-oriented or discussion-based course.  During lectures, the system can be used to assess understanding of content or gather class opinion.  Some faculty use CPS to administer quizzes.  For discussions, a student response summary can be used to begin conversation.  Students self-report views in anonymity and are allowed to see a portrait their classmates' opinions.  They can use this information as a springboard to discuss the common and contentious.

Advice on Using CPS

Contact Jane Nelson or Andy Bryson at 766-4847 to schedule a consultation.  They can give you examples of how fellow instructors are using the system and offer advice about integrating CPS into your course.  Instructors should begin planning several months in advance to ensure a smooth transition and supply availability.
