Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell

Using the successful format he developed for his first two books, Gladwell explores an eclectic set of subjects to argue that individual biographies do not always help to explain how people achieve success. Instead of examining the individual, Gladwell says, we should examine historical, cultural, and social patterns that scaffold success. A staff writer for The New Yorker, Gladwell exploits his journalistic training in investigative reporting to write the nine case studies in this book. In the autobiographical Epilogue, he applies his theory to explain his own success.

Hope’s Boy by Andrew Bridge
Book Discussion Leader: Nyla Bailey, Assistant Lecturer, Political Science

Andrew Bridge’s moving memoir of growing up in a broken child-care system is a heart-wrenching plea for rethinking our foster-care system. It is also an opportunity to think about our education system and the part that education can play in the success or lack of success of foster children and others living in challenging circumstances. Bridge took refuge in academics and kind teachers when deprived of nurturing support, defying odds by not only graduating from high school but earning a scholarship to Wesleyan and a law degree from Harvard. We are reminded, however, that not all youth are able to defy those odds. Andrew Bridge has dedicated his life to helping children living in poverty and the foster care system.
