In her latest book, published in 2007, Barbara Kingsolver writes a narrative about her family’s decision to live for a year on a Virginia farm with a commitment to eat only locally-produced food.  Advertised as part memoir and part journalistic investigation, the book contains chapters written by her husband, Steven Hopp, and her daughter Camille. We offer this book discussion as part of UW’s conversation about sustainability issues.

Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain by Oliver Sacks - ** REGISTRATION CLOSED **
Wednesday, June 11th,  from 1:00 - 2:30 p.m.
EN 1062 (basement of the Engineering Bldg.)

In his latest book, Oliver Sacks provides another set of engaging case-studies about the remarkable properties of the human brain. His vignettes range from the most ordinary occurrence of having a strain of music stuck in one’s head to the extraordinary musical experiences of a person who has been struck by lightning. This book can help us understand how music can be a powerful part of our work lives and our teaching.

The Legend of Colton H. Bryant by Alexandra Fuller -
** REGISTRATION CLOSED **

Wednesday, June 18th, from 10:00 - 11:30 p.m.

EN 1062 (basement of the Engineering Bldg.)

Hot off the press with a May 2008 publication date, this book by Wyoming writer Alexandra Fuller extends a piece she wrote for the
New Yorker in 2007 called “Boomtown Blues.” In the May 1 New York Times article “At Home with Alexandra Fuller,” Jim Robbins says that “she considers herself a messenger who must bear witness to what she sees as the war on the land, with its natural and human casualties.” Read this book for Fuller’s view of the Sublette County energy boom.

Inside the Undergraduate Experience by Catherine Hoffman Beyer, Gerald Gillmore, and Andrew Fisher
Wednesday, June 25th, from 1:00 - 2:30 p.m.

EN 1062 (basement of Engineering Bldg.)

Discussion of this book is an important follow-up to last fall’s “Pathways for Learning” Forum. Researchers at the University of Washington report case studies of several students to document  learning from their first-year experience to graduation. The book highlights the central importance of academic disciplines and
faculty for the success of these students and provides advice about how departments can assess for this kind of impact.
