Losing Matt Shepard Life and Politics in the Aftermath of Anti-Gay Murder by Beth Loffreda
The Ellbogen Center for Teaching and Learning is pleased to sponsor a book discussion in connection with the Shepard Symposium on Social Justice.
Thursday, March 26, 2009 3:00– 4:30 pm Engineering Seminar Room 1062 Light Refreshments Book Discussion Leader: Jeanne Holland, Associate Professor of English
Loffreda examines the events surrounding the murder of Matt Shepard. At the time of the murder, Loffreda was the faculty advisor to UW's LGBTA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Association.) With many interviews, she reveals the impact of the crime on local gays and lesbians. Loffreda points out the concern that national gay and lesbian organizations had about the crime's media impact versus their relative lack of concern with actual LGBTA persons living in Wyoming. She investigates how Laramie law enforcement, journalists, and criminal justice personnel were affected by the crime and the subsequent national media attention it received.
