Seminars to Help You Prepare for Teaching

Monday,

May 11

Engineering 1055

9:00—10:30 am, From the Ground Up (Robin Hill)
Bring some of your own course materials and work through, with us, the task of mapping teaching needs to online course facilities, for a course website that supplements classroom instruction. The context will be the pilot WyoSakai platform, a rich environment, but we will limit ourselves to the basics, with a mapping from materials to tools that should work in any platform.

2:00-3:30 pm, An Overview of Course Websites (Robin Hill)
Robin will provide a brisk explanation of the various methods provided by UW for teaching online, including their facilities, workflows, and integration into your campus courses, with emphasis on the default, Course Studio in WyoWeb. For preparation, please see "Where can I get a website for my class or research group?" in the Faculty Help questions at the Instructional Computing Services website (www.uwyo.edu/ctl/Inst_Computing), and the materials on the Online Supplemental Courses website under "Faculty Resources."

2:00-3:30 pm, Helping ESL Students with Writing (Margaret Garner)
Considering the university is recruiting more international students, especially undergraduate students, we need to think about how to best serve them. With that in mind, in this session, we will talk about the challenges and strategies of working with English as Second Language students, both undergraduate and graduate, especially in writing.

2:00-3:30 pm, Introduction to Online Course Platforms (Robin Hill)

Robin will cover the basics of the full-service online platforms that we offer for supplemental use: eCompanion and WyoSakai. Attendees will see how to request and navigate a course shell, display a syllabus and post announcements, upload materials, and carry on discussions. We will try to get to online grade maintenance and quizzing, as well.

4:00-5:00 pm, eCollege Web Seminar (Robin Hill)
A brief demonstration and explanation of the features of the new version of the eCollege/eCompanion course platform called ".NExT," presented by the company's staff.  This session, a repeat of those that have been offered regularly throughout the spring, will be helpful to current and new eCompanion instructors.

2:00-3:30 pm, Wyocast-on-Demand (Andy Bryson)
UW Information Technology and the Ellbogen CTL have been running a pilot this academic year of a new instructional technology that allows the capture of sound, video and computer presentations and wrapping it all up in a package that can be viewed live or on demand, using a simple Internet connection. Join this session to hear about the capabilities and logistics of using WyoCast webcasting.

Sharing the Responsibility for Providing Student Feedback (Jane Nelson) - Coe 307

Providing students with good feedback is equal in importance to providing good content, but this responsibility does not need to belong to the instructor alone. Learn several ways for students to get information about the quality of their learning from sources beyond the
instructor.

*  All sessions are held in the basement of the Engineering Building (see room numbers above). Go to the main south entrance, head downstairs, and turn right.
*  Registration assists us with meal planning. Register online here or call the ECTL at 766-4847.
*  Refreshments provided at all sessions.
*  We are happy to provide accommodations for those who have special needs. Please call or email us at ellbogenctl@uwyo.edu to assist with planning.
