The Program in College Teaching
(PCT) is a cooperative effort of the Graduate School, the Ellbogen
Center for Teaching and Learning, and the Outreach School designed to
help you prepare for your teaching responsibilities now and in the
future. The program's goals are to make you a better instructor
as a graduate student and prepare you to enter the classroom with high
level teaching skills as a member of a college or university faculty.
The program consists of several components that usually take a minimum
of one year to complete. Master's and PhD students can apply.
Those with research assignments are welcome to participate assuming
they can complete all the components. As a result of your
participation in the program, you will receive a Certificate of
Completion that you can use for seeking employment or admission to
further graduate education. You will also develop a personal
teaching portfolio, reflecting your growth and effectiveness as a
teacher.
Application to the program is
accomplished by designing an individualized plan in one of three
options: classroom teaching and learning, distance teaching and
learning, or the scholarship of teaching and learning. Your program
plan should be submitted to the Director of the Center for Teaching
and Learning. A committee will review your proposal, request
modifications, if necessary, and notify you in writing regarding your
admission. You are welcome to seek advice from the ECTL director and
others to help you write your program plan.
The application consists of the
following:
Note that you will not be admitted
to the program during the first semester of enrollment at the
university unless you are a graduate of the same department at the
University of Wyoming in which you are doing your graduate work. This
restriction allows you to learn about the faculty and pursue positive
relationships appropriate to the desired experience.
Applications may be obtained from
the Center for Teaching and Learning, third floor, Coe Library, or
online at
www.uwyo.edu/ctl.
You will choose one of three options for the program: classroom
teaching and learning, distance teaching and learning, or the
scholarship of teaching and learning. Each of these options has
several components, briefly summarized here:
-
Participation in an extensive
teaching seminar.
-
A mentored teaching experience,
where a selected and approved faculty mentor will work one-on-one
with you to review your teaching experiences. Some participants
include more than one mentor.
-
Completion of a set of
self-designed activities, aimed at assisting you to pursue
investigations into selected teaching topics.
-
Development of a public
presentation in which you share with a designated audience some of
your work for this program.
-
Creation of a teaching portfolio
documenting the various activities associated with your
participation in the program.
When you
have completed all of the components, you will receive a certificate
accompanied by a letter that will provide a general description of the
Program in College Teaching and a summary of your individualized
program plan. The intention is to communicate to potential employers
or graduate schools your accomplishments. You will receive this
certificate in a small, celebratory event where you will be asked to
summarize these accomplishments. Attendees at this event may include
fellow graduate students, your mentors and other faculty members from
your department, and active participants in the Program for College
Teaching.
In order to
participate in the program, you must be a regularly registered
graduate student. All requirements must be completed while you are an
admitted member of the program. You will be expected to attend
occasional PCT meetings during which you will present a progress
report and share your experiences with others in the program.
