How will the new WyoWeb portal affect my teaching?

Last Update:  17 August 2007; R. Hill

WyoWeb

The University of Wyoming's World-Wide Web intranet, called WyoWeb, provides all kinds of information and general web services for students, faculty, and staff, departments, divisions, and units.  The portal, at
  http://wyoweb.uwyo.edu
will be separate from the public website, remaining at
  http://www.uwyo.edu
What you see after login is a set of tabs (pages) with several channels (mini-websites) on each.

To reach the faculty part of WyoWeb, log on, using the standard UWYO domain account values for user ID and password, and then open the Faculty tab.  Your Course Studio shells will be found in the "My Courses" channel, on the link labeled "Click Here."

The main effects of WyoWeb for teaching faculty:
Online grade submission through faculty channels (see Faculty Channels below)
Tracking of advisees and other students through Banner Self-Service (see Faculty Channels below)
  Course Studio shells
for each course taught (see Course Studio below)

Faculty Channels:  Faculty Dashboard, Faculty Grade Assignment and Banner Self-Service

Your Faculty Dashboard channel shows your courses, and their enrollees, and your advisees, with data drawn from the Office of the Registrar.  This channel is not intended for course materials, but for administrative processing.  You can see the same data under Banner Self-Service (which replaces Hole in the Wall).  Rosters can be copied from the Summary List and pasted into spreadsheets.  These tasks, as well as grade submission and advisee tracking (and other student information retrieval tasks) are explained in the "WyoWeb Facilities for the Paperwork of Teaching" document.

Course Studio:  Default course shells

Your "My Courses" channel will provide online course shells for each course for which you are the instructor of record.  By default, they are the Course Studio platform, but you can change that. .  When you use your UWYO domain account to enter the portal, WyoWeb, you should see a channel entitled "My Courses." (upper left, by default) on the Faculty tab.  Click on the link there to see your course list.  Then select the academic term from the drop-down list, and, from the list of courses that results, click on a course title to see its website, with the homepage displayed.  The tools appear in sections on the left side.  See the other documents mentioned on this page for instructions on setting up the course homepage and website.

Your students will see the same homepage, except that they don't have Configuration Tools, and don't have Content Tools unless you grant them privileges.

If you want to use a different course website: To set the reference, in My Courses, to an eCompanion or WebCT shell, or to an external URL, click the EDIT button next to the course title, and select one of the four choices.  The first and default choice is the Course Studio option.  The fourth choice, "Other," provides a blank field where you can type a website address of your own.
