Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Ellbogen Center for Teaching and Learning?
The Ellbogen CTL, established in the fall of 1991, is a university-wide program administered from the Office of Academic Affairs. The mission of the CTL is to provide leadership, advocacy, support, faculty development, and instructional services for teaching and learning excellence. Formerly known as the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE), the Ellbogen CTL was renamed after John P. "Jack" Ellbogen on September 6, 2001.

Who is part of the Ellbogen CTL and who does the Ellbogen CTL serve?
The ECTL has a full-time director and full-time office associate senior. It oversees the Writing Center, LeaRN, Instructional Computing Services, and Instructional Media Services. The ECTL also operates under the guidance of an advisory council with teaching faculty and staff representation from a broad range of academic units. The ECTL serves all members of the university teaching and learning community and depends upon the active participation and partnerships among them.

Where is the Ellbogen CTL?
The Ellbogen CTL is located on the third floor of Coe Library with the main office housed in Coe Library Room 307, the Writing Center in room 308, Instructional Computing Services in room 307I, and Instructional Media Services in room 307E.

How may the Ellbogen CTL benefit me and how may I participate in ECTL activities?
Ellbogen CTL-sponsored events, programs, and projects are open to all personnel, including graduate students, who contribute to the University's teaching mission. Information about Ellbogen CTL events is distributed widely, including the faculty and staff listserves, university-wide flyers, posters, and the Branding Iron and Laramie Boomerang.  The Writing Center serves all writers at UW on any writing task. Instructional Computing Services provides consultation and training on incorporating instructional technology into the classroom. Instructional Media Services provides consultation on developing and producing instructional media using computing, audio/video, and a variety of other instructional techniques from the very traditional to the most advanced.  LeaRN focuses on building partnerships between students and faculty to create dynamic learning environments.  The Competitive Grants Program provides support for teaching improvement projects. The program is designed to support departments, programs, and colleges in achieving teaching and learning-related goals outlined in their academic plans. The 2003-2004 grants were awarded in October.  You may also participate in a number of Ellbogen CTL workshops. See our event calendar for specific dates and times.

When does the Ellbogen CTL operate and when are its programs and services available to me?
The Ellbogen CTL programs and services are available throughout the year. Office hours and schedules are consistent with the University calendar.

What is the Ellbogen CTL Advisory Council?
Representatives from each of the seven colleges compose the Advisory Council. A graduate student serves on the board as well. Arts and Sciences has multiple members on the council as the college is so large.  Staff members and program liaisons complete the council. The council meets 1 - 2 times per semester to assist the director and staff in program planning.

How long are terms?
Council members usually serve a three-year term.
