Last update:  7 April 2005; D. Sethi

ON/OFF

  • The power button is on the upper right of the keyboard.  If the battery has lost its charge fully, you may need a cold reboot:
        Ctrl-key + Command(Apple)-key + Power Button.
  • Use the touchpad to maneuver the pointer.
  • Log on as UWuser, with password “ectl” (same as our other laptops).

·         When done:
Apple menu --> Shut Down.
If using wireless mouse, turn it off by sliding cover over light.

MOUSE and KEYBOARD

  • Most commands found on right-click in Windows are on menus; they will also show on ctrl + click.  Note:  The "Command" key, necessary for some operations, is to the left of the space bar and labeled with an apple and a closed curve that looks like a percent sign.
  • If using wireless mouse, turn it on by sliding cover to expose light.  Should make connection and work automatically.
Otherwise, Systems Prefs --> Mouse & Keyboard --> Bluetooth tab --> Set up new device --> (continue until “pairing” complete).
Rock or tap mouse to click.
  • To jump to the beginning or end of line:  CTRL+arrow, Command+arrow
  • To delete forward: Fn+Del

DESKTOP, MENUS, COMMANDS, FILES

Apple menu (blue apple on far left) contains common commands, such as “Shut Down” and “Systems Preferences.”

Finder is like Windows Explorer.  Click (little blue face) to open directory window.
Alternately, to see everything, click “MacHD” icon on desktop.

Common applicaton programs wait in the Dock (bottom bar) -- like tray and Programs list combined.
Click icon to open program.  Open applications show little arrowheads in Dock.

Active application determines menu bar at top, but may not display open window.
Window Handling: close (red), minimize (amber), maximize (green) buttons.

  • Closing a window does not halt the application.
  • Each program also has its own application-name menu, next to the apple, that contains general program commands, such as “Quit (program)” and “Preferences” (for that program.)

DISKS AND DRIVES; PROJECTORS AND DISPLAYS

  • To burn a CD, put a blank in the drive (thin opening in front); when CD window pops up, name it and the disk icon will appear on desktop.  Drag files onto the disk icon to add them to the list; to burn (write the files), drag the disk icon to the trash and the icon will change to a flame.
  • To eject a disk, drag its icon to the trash in the dock (the picure changes to the "Eject" icon), or click the triangular "Eject" icon beside the drive name.
  • To play a DVD, you may need to go to "System Preferences" --> Displays --> Arrangement --> Mirror Displays.
  • To set the resolution or connect to a projector, go to "Displays" as above; "Detect Displays."

APPLICATIONS

  • MS OFFICE:  WORD, EXCEL, etc.
Office X contains Microsoft Office apps.  Find in Dock with stylized icons or find in “Microsoft Office X” folder on Mad HD.  Choose document type in gallery window and click OK.
  • WEB BROWSER
Safari is the browser.  Wireless is integrated.  On campus, launch Safari to reach the Internet or UW network and log in to the Roving Planet wireless portal.
Note: IT will soon require VPN for wireless access. To use, launch VPNClient, make sure that the "UW-wireless" profile is selected, click “Connect” and then authenticate. For example: User:  uwyo/hill Password:xxxx
Then launch Safari or proceed with other network connections.
  • Text Editor
For plain text, source code, HTML files, brief notes, and so forth, the application is "TextEdit."
