“Cars and Consumers”
Topic of 4th Annual UW Consumer Issues Conference

Matters of interest to car buyers, car owners, and businesses will be the focus of the March 25, 2003, University of Wyoming Consumer Issues Conference from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Wyoming Union.

Lenora Bohren of the National Vehicle Emissions Control and Safety Lab at Colorado State University will give a keynote address on the nature of car culture, R. David Pittle, a vice president of Consumers Union will give a luncheon keynote speech on safety of autos, tires, and car seats.  AARP attorney Laura Polacheck will give a keynote presentation on warranties, safety and on advocacy.

Other topics of discussion will include buying new and used cars, leasing and financing, repairs and insurance, self-regulation, resolution of consumer complaints, safety issues, and licensing for youths and elderly people.  Dee Pridgen, associate dean of the UW College of Law, will speak, and legislators, government attorneys, and representatives of the automobile industry and consumer’s union will also participate.  For more details, click on the conference agenda link below.

The conference has evolved into a regional opportunity for those interested to come together, learn, and engage in potential action.  It is growing each year and now includes more people from Colorado such as Carole Makela, a new planning committee member and professor of family and consumer sciences at Colorado State University.

This year’s panel of legislators will include a balance of party representation and will involve Wyoming and Colorado officials. Conference planners hope that exciting discussion will result from adding the voice of industry.

The UW Colleges of Agriculture and Law, UW Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, UW Cooperative Extension Service, UW student government, Wyoming Attorney General’s office, Wyoming Extension Association of FCS, Wyoming Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, the Colorado State University College of Applied Human Sciences, and AARP are all involved in the conference.
