Admission

Admission to the M.S. Degree Program
in Speech-Language Pathology

Admission Requirements
The division limits the number of master's degree students that are admitted each year to our on-campus and distance master's program.  Admission is on a competitive basis, with consideration of an applicant's credentials in relation to those of other individuals applying for admission for that year.
Minimum requirements for full admission to our master's program in speech-language pathology are the following:
1.   GPA
Official transcripts showing an undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 (4.0 scale).
2.   GRE
Official report of Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Quantitative, Verbal, and Writing scores. A cumulative score of at least 900 on the verbal and quantitative sections is required. The Division requires all applicants to report their GRE score, regardless of whether or not they already have a graduate degree.
The GRE can be taken almost anytime, for actual score reporting or just practice. The national sign-up telephone number is 1-800-GRE-CALL. The local number is 307-766-3719. Plan to take the GRE in the fall preceding the application due date.
3.   Letters
Three favorable reference letters on rating forms to support your application. At least two of the letters should be from previous instructors who are familiar with your academic performance and can address your potential for success in graduate school.
4.   Coursework
Official transcripts showing completion of core undergraduate coursework in communication disorders (called Leveling). A course in each of Phonetics, Language Acquisition, and Anatomy & Physiology of Speech & Hearing are required. In addition, at least two of the other five courses on the Division Leveling list (or their equivalent) are required for acceptance. The remaining courses may be completed during the graduate program.
ASHA-CAA also requires one college non-remedial course in each of: social science, biological science, physical science, and math. A file review will be conducted on acceptance into the program to determine missing courses. The fewer courses that have to be made up, the more manageable your course of study in graduate school.
5.   Candidacy Statement
The candidacy statement is a short essay (maximum 400 words) on your qualifications for a graduate degree in speech-language pathology.
Statement prompt: Explain why you should be among the select group that is chosen for this educational and career opportunity.
6.   On-campus or Distance
Tell us which program you want. At the beginning of your candidacy statement, state whether you would like to be considered for the on-campus or the distance programs. You cannot mix the programs, but can be considered for either or both.  See our other webpages for descriptions of the two programs.
7.   TOEFL International students from non-English-speaking countries will need a TOEFL score of 600 to show English proficiency. Additional sources of evidence may be requested by the division to make a final decision. English proficiency must be sufficient for success in graduate school and certification as a speech-language pathologist in the United States, even if the applicant intends to remain in his or her native country.
Provisional Status
If you do not meet the GPA or GRE requirements for full admission, you may be admitted as a provisional student if the Division determines that there are sufficient areas of strength for success in graduate school in comparison to other applicants.  If you are admitted as a provisional student, provisions will be placed on admission such as a particular grade point average, performance criteria, or completion of certain courses. Provisional students are not eligible for graduate assistantships.

Application Procedure
Apply Through CSDCAS
Applications to our master's program must be made through an electronic, centralized application service: the Communication Sciences and Disorders Centralized Application Service for Clinical Education in Audiology and Speech Language Pathology (CSDCAS). Instructions and application procedures are available at https://portal.csdcas.org.
You will submit the materials listed above to CSDCAS through the applicant portal. All official transcripts must be sent to CSDCAS at the following address:
        CSDCAS Verification Department
        P.O. Box 9113
        Watertown, MA 02471
The CSDCAS customer service is available Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm EST (phone: 617-612-2030; email: csdcasinfo@csdcas.org).

CSDCAS Application Deadline
The deadline forreceipt of a verified complete application by CSDCAS is February 1.
Applications received after that date (including incomplete applications) will be considered only if space is available.  Note that CSDCAS requires about two weeks to verify and process an application once it is complete, so to be sure the verification process can be completed by the deadline, all materials should be submitted to CSDCAS by mid-January.
Applicants will typically be notified of the division's decision on acceptance, alternate, or denial by March 15. Alternates may be offered positions that become available after April 15.
International Students
International students, other than Canadian, should submit their application materials directly to the University of Wyoming. You will have to have your transcript assessed for equivalency to the American university system before you can be considered for acceptance.
In addition, for International including Canadian, the university will have to determine whether your financial resources are sufficient for your stay here, which involves completing a Confidential Financial Statement form. Contact the Admissions office of the University prior to January to be sure that you meet all requirements by February 1.
Requirements Following Offer of Admission
Students who are recommended for admission to the program will be required to additionally provide or complete the following items. All the university forms can be obtained at the Graduate Student Resources webpage.
  1. University graduate student application form
  2. University application fee
  3. University graduate assistantship application form
  4. If you are International, a Confidential Financial Statement form
  5. Two sets of official transcripts (for the university and the division)
  6. Two sets of GRE score report (for the university and the division)
  7. Criminal background check
Admittance to the graduate program in speech-language pathology is contingent upon passing a criminal background check. Each student recommended for admission into program will be required to obtain, pay, and pass a criminal background check. These background checks are routinely required by schools, hospitals, and other agencies that participate in the clinical education of our students. The results of the background check may determine admission to our program.
Additionally, you must inform the Dean of the College if you are convicted of a crime while enrolled in your training program. You may also be required to update your background check each year. Each training site will be informed that you have completed a background check prior to your placement at that site. Please see the College of Health Sciences website for the policy and procedures document.
