For admission to our graduate programs, you'll need an undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.0 (4.0 scale) for regular admission to Graduate School (PMA master's degree student). The UW Graduate School prefers a cumulative score of at least 900 on the verbal and quantitative sections of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) for admission. The Division requires all applicants to report their GRE score, regardless of whether they already have a graduate degree or not. The GRE is offered two dates in the Fall and one date in the Spring. There is also a computer version of the GRE that can be taken almost anytime. The national sign-up telephone number is 1-800-GRE-CALL. The local number is (307)766-3719. Plan to take the GRE the year before entry into the graduate program and have results forwarded to UW. You will also need three favorable reference letters to support your application.
In addition to the GPA, GRE, and recommendation letter requirements listed above, you must also have taken a Phonetics course, a Language Acquisition course and at least 3 of the remaining 5 undergraduate core courses (or their equivalent) (see leveling courses).
If you do not meet the GPA or GRE requirements, you may be admitted as a provisional student or as an enrichment student at the discretion of the department head and Graduate School dean. However, if you are admitted under either of these categories, you must achieve a 3.0 GPA and/or meet GRE requirements during your first semester of enrollment. Only 12 semester hours of graduate credit taken as an enrichment student may be applied toward a graduate degree, and enrichment students may not enroll in clinical practicum or research courses. There may also be provisions placed on your admission such as performance criteria, successful completion of certain courses, or other criteria.
For admission to our graduate programs, complete and return the following forms:
Application for Admission (send to the UW Graduate School);
Two copies of all official transcripts (return one to our department and one to the UW Graduate School); and
Division of Communication Disorders Application for Admission (download, complete and return to the department with three letters of recommendation).
You should complete this application process by February 1 for fall admission. On-campus students can also apply November 1 for spring admission. If you are applying for financial aid, an Assistantship Application also needs to be completed and returned (see financial assistance section for more information).
