After a summer that included hosting the Wyoming Intercollegiate Debate Cooperative, Matt Stannard teaching debate again in Korea, and an unprecedented number of Round Robin invitations, the UW Debate Team has already been in the sweet 16 or better at its first four season tournaments:

At Gonzaga University, Sept. 13-15, two UW policy debate teams advanced to the octofinal round, at a tough national season opener: Mike Bausch and Tony Johnson, both from Boise ID, as well as Jamie Piechura of Newcastle and Sam Allen of Meridian, ID, advanced to the sweet 16 of the Gonzaga Jesuit Debates by beating teams from UC-Berkeley, Weber State, Whitman College, and the University of Southern California.

At William Jewell College the next weekend, the parliamentary teams of Lindsey DeVries (Glenrock) and Kristen Brown (Casper), as well as Kathryn Starkey (Jackson) and Nick Larmer (Gillette) scored several successive victories over a very powerful Washburn squad in order to each advance into the tournament's octafinal debate.  DeVries was named the tournament's 3rd best speaker, while Brown, a former policy debater in her first national parliamentary tournament, was awarded 10th speaker.

Having warmed up, both the policy and parliamentary squads had even better performances on the weekend of the 26-28.  DeVries and Brown won several debates in a row to emerge as the top seed at the Claremont Colleges invitational, where they finished in the quarter-final debate, with DeVries being awarded 3rd speaker honors and Brown improving her speaking performance and taking 7th. Meanwhile, the policy squad held home court at a scrimmage involving UW, Denver, Idaho State, and Weber State.  Bausch and Johnson swept the tournament by going undefeated and winning 1st and 2nd speakers, respectively.  A third UW policy team, Travis Beach (Castle Rock, CO) and Grae Harper (Boise) also stepped up, taking second overall at the tournament with only one early loss, and receiving 3rd and 4th speaker respectively.

Some other brief news:

--Bausch and Johnson have been invited to the Las Vegas Round Robin, along with powerhouses including West Georgia, Emory, and Central Oklahoma, this week.  It's a huge honor to be invited and we hope we can get better by debating more of the best teams.

--UW hosts its intercollegiate tournament, the Top of the Rockies, this weekend on Oct. 4 and 5.  The debates will mainly take place in the Classroom Building, and are open to the public.  23 schools from Texas, California, Kansas, Washington, Oregon, Utah, Colorado, and Montana will join Wyoming colleges in the debates
