My research interests are currently focused in inorganic chemistry. Research areas include the synthesis, characterization, and examination of a number of unique reaction pathways. One of my overriding goals is to understand the relationship between structure and function. I'm especially interested in how reactions occur (mechanistic chemistry), and use a variety of means (e.g., spectroscopic and physical methods) to analyze how reactions occur and to understand the electronic structure of the observed substances. A number of projects are currently underway including i) the development of small manganese models to better understand the bioinorganic chemistry of manganese in nature, ii) bioinspired water-gas shift catalysts, and iii) the photochemical reactivity of low valent manganese centers.
